Can anyone explain to me the purpose of the play-off stages of the Superleague at the end of the regular season – other than as a purely money-making exercise, of course?

It is quite common in American sports to have play-offs because over there most of the leagues are regionalised and no one team plays every other team during the regular season. A knock-out system to determine the best outfit therefore makes some sort of sense. But not in Superleague, where every team plays every other team – home and away.

Consequently, we have the ludicrous situation of the team finishing fifth last season – Leeds Rhinos - being crowned Champions, even though Warrington Wolves were the best side in the league.

I wonder how soon it will be before this state of affairs undermines the regular season. It makes little sense for teams to go flat out, risking injury, when the sensible strategy would be to just tick over, do enough to finish in the play-off qualifying positions, and then go for broke in the play-offs. That is pretty much what Leeds did last season.

If we have to have play-offs, and, as I say, I really cannot see the need for them, let them be a separate and distinct cup competition. But let’s have the team that finishes top of the regular season celebrated as Champions, please.
