WELCOME to the launch of this year’s thrilling MENWN Trophy competition, which was enjoyed by a record number of entrants from local clubs in 2008.

The 2009 MENWN Trophy is a great way for golfers, who enjoy competition on a variety of courses, to meet new friends and win fabulous prizes in its tenth season.

There is a terrific range of prizes on offer with the winning ladies’ pair and the winning man each receiving a golfing holiday for two in Cork, including accommodation, flights, transfers and golf courtesy of main sponsor Peter Walsh of Fairway Golf Holidays in Bramhall.

The winners will also receive MENWN trophies supplied by Ryan PGT of Stockport.

The runners-up will each receive vouchers to enjoy breakfast and a round of golf at the fabulous venue of Mere Golf and Country Club.

Also on finals day there will be a full prize table, including prizes from Made2Measure Golf, Styal Golf Club and all entrants will receive a voucher for the excellent driving range at Styal Golf Club.

In 2008 the entry was swelled by golfers from Trafford’s nine clubs, plus golfers who live in Trafford and are members of golf clubs in the region.

Before the final day, which takes place at Marple Golf Club on Sunday, September 13, there is the drama of match play Stableford rounds for the men’s singles and the ladies’ pairs.

Marple Golf Club has done a terrific job of hosting the final for the past three years and they will again welcome the last 20 men and eight ladies pairs who will compete in their respective championships in the final.

Marple, positioned by the side of the Macclesfield canal, has drawn rave reviews from local golfers for the excellent challenge and condition of its scenic course with fine views over the Stockport area and its friendly and well-appointed clubhouse and excellent catering services.

The club professional, David Myers, and his staff, offer great deals on clubs plus the usual teaching and repair services.

It is an annual host for the Manchester Alliance Glenmuir Am Am Challenge.

To reach the finals day the ladies pairs and men will play Stableford match play knock out rounds, with the first round beginning in May and finishing on September 5.

Players entering the competition before February 28 will go into a draw with some super prizes given by Daniel Haughian from the Adlington Driving Range.

A fuller list of the prizes on offer will be given in MENWN editions in due course.

The closing dates for entry are April 20 for men and ladies.

The cost to enter is only £6 per player and this includes a donation to the Golf Foundation, which does so much to support and encourage junior golf.

Defending their titles this year will be the men’s champion David Smith from Salford, a member of Hart Common Golf Club.

He said: "This is a great competition for local club golfers with some terrific prizes on offer.

"I enjoyed entering and playing in 2008 and was fortunate to reach the final.

"To win such a prestigious competition was a real bonus."

Defending the ladies’ title will be Macclesfield Golf Club President Myra Clark and her partner Catherine Atkin.

Myra said: "To win such a prestigious competition was unbelievable during a very memorable year for me.

"The competition has given me the opportunity to meet other golfers, make new friends and play new courses.

"I would urge as many ladies as possible to enter the 2009 competition - it’s well organised by WGTB and the pairs competition for ladies was a most enjoyable competition."

You are eligible to enter the MENWN Trophy if you are a member (over 18 years old) of the listed clubs, or live in a MENWN area and are a member of a golf club with a recognised handicap - limits are 21 for men and 28 for ladies.
