PICTURES have been released of two men who tried to walk out of a jeweller’s with a diamond ring they had not paid for.
They asked to look at the item and handed the case back to staff at the Urmston shop, but it was empty.
They were prevented from leaving when the sales assistant at Orb Jewellery activated the door’s magnetic lock, shutting them inside.
They gave the ring back and said they would withdraw cash to pay for it but did not return. Police Constable Jason Hunt said: "We believe that this was an attempt to steal and not just an innocent mistake.
"Luckily, the offenders were unable to evade the store’s security, but we need to make sure no further attempts like this are made.
"We hope that people will recognise the men from these images. We would also like to warn shopkeepers about this pair, and if they notice any suspicious behaviour they should contact us." The men are described as dark skinned with European accents. One was 6ft tall and of slim build.
He had dark eyes and was wearing a dark coat.
The other was 5ft 5in tall, stocky and had a goatee beard. He wore a light-coloured jacket.
Police are trying to trace the pair following the incident at the shop on Station Road on Wednesday, May 13.
Anyone with information should call police on 0161 856 7685 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
