Watch for that bunker

PUT IT THERE: Davyhulme Parks’ Rob Todhunter hands over a cheque to club honorary treasurer Jack Burton.

GOLFERS at Davyhulme Park Golf Club have been paying a heavy penalty for going into captain Rob Todhunter’s nominated bunker over his year of office.

The payment of 50p for each shot into the bunker has added a large portion of the cheque for £1,000 he was able to hand over to the Alzheimer’s Research Trust, which is the leading research charity for dementia and was Todhunter’s chosen charity during his year of office

Park’s men were involved in two competitions, and in a Four-Man Texas Scrambl the fab four of Robin Meadowcroft, Peter Fildes, Geoff Lever and Bill Goddard roared to victory with 44 points.

In a singles Stableford, Charlie McGloin led in with 38 points, one clear of Mannny Obasuke.

Park’s ladies played a 15-hole medal and in-form Ann Kerr was first past the post on 57 from Lynne Niland (58).

In a par competition for Park’s ladies, Norma Goddard was top of the shop with +1, from the level par of Lin Li.

Sale’s men played a singles Stableford and Gary Edwards was out on his own with 40 points, from Paul Herrin and David Parsons (36) and Colin Byrne (35).

Sale ladies enjoyed a five-club competition and Vincente Gleave led in with 33 points, with Linda Jenkinson in the runners-up berth

Ashton-on-Mersey’s men completed the Wood Seddon Trophy with the sixth round being won by T Blease on +4, from B Philips on +3.

There was some great scoring in the finals with D Huffman taking the trophy with a superb +9, seeing him home from M Cousen +8.

Mersey’s ladies played for Pat Daly’s Prize in a St Patrick’s competition and J Sunderland led in from Z Hogan.

R Hartley won J Sunderland’s prize in a second competition ahead of J Sunderland and G Johnston.

  • THE race for the Manchester Alliance Order of Merit hotted up in the BB Stableford at Birchwood, sponsored by Tommy McCormack of Chapel House Airport Parking.

In recent weeks Knutsford pro Tim Maxwell had opened up a useful lead at the top of the table, but Dukinfield’s David Green and Sean Doherty of Bury closed the gap as they shared the individual pro prize with 39 points apiece.

Both were in the frame in the pro am section that saw Swinton Park duo David Smith and amateur Lee Parr top of the tree with 44 points.

They won a card play-off from Sean Doherty and his bother Ciaran, with David Green and his amateur partner Paul Crisp of Ashton-on-Mersey next in on 43 points.

Familiar names led in the am-am section with Blackley’s dynamic duo of Julien Robinson and Alan Lane again first past the post with 39 points, one ahead of Kevin Hawkins (Withington) and John Russell (Sale) who beat off Carl Kennedy (Shrigley Hall) and Gudz Ahmed (Mere) in a cpo on 38 points.
