An 11-year-old boy has been refused a place at a new school – because he lives just 50 metres (54 yards) too far away.

Jordan Davenport applied for a place at the £32m East Manchester Academy in Beswick following a massive PR drive by the headteacher and teachers to get students.

The first grammar school in the country assessed to be failing has come out of special measures.

Parents and former pupils were horrified when Stretford Grammar School was dismissed as ‘inadequate’ by inspectors. The selective school was regarded as one of the jewels in Trafford’s educational crown.

EDUCATION centres used by hundreds of north-west schools are to be shut down by United Utilities.

Seven outdoor centres teach water safety, conservation and science to more than 20,000 children a year. The electricity and water operator is planning to shed up to 20 per cent of its 9,000 workforce.
