How to read the data

The figures are based on written tests taken by every 11-year-old child in England as they finish primary school.

The Key Stage 2 exams - also known as SATs - test children's knowledge and ability in English and maths. Pupils are asked to perform calculations, write reports, or identify key phrases in a passage of text.

Students are expected to reach 'Level 4' (equal to 27 out of a possible 33 points), which means they display the skills expected of their age group.

The government is using a new measurement to gauge the performance of schools, which is the percentage of pupils who gain 'level four' in maths and English.

Some schools, including special schools enter few or no students to take the tests. We have not published information about schools which did not have any 2011 results, or where fewer than six pupils sat exams.
