A new era?

MOVING: Harry Twamley receives the keys to the Tameside Stadium from Roland Bardsley, contract manager Charlie Hunt with Cllr Dave Sweeton.

EXCLUSIVE

ASHTON United and Tameside Council are still in negotiations over a possible switch for the Robins to the new Tameside Stadium.

The Advertiser can reveal council chiefs are in discussions with United about a move from Hurst Cross to the new £3.5m stadium on Richmond Street just as it seemed they would stay at their current home ground.

With Dave Pace seemingly happy to keep Droylsden at the Butcher's Arms, attention has switched again towards a groundshare between United and Curzon Ashton.

The Advertiser understands the council remains keen for two clubs to share the ground and that United would be their preferred choice.

On the field though, Curzon were finally handed the keys to the stadium last week with chief executive Harry Twamley pleased the club had finally moved in.

He said: "We've been working on this for many years and it's been a long, hard road.

"The club's always been a community club and we intend to develop it. We want the place buzzing with young and old people.

"We have got to pay tribute to the council for their magnificent backing, particularly the leader Cllr Roy Oldham because he's been working with us for 15 years to get a stadium built here."

The Tameside Stadium is a 4,000-capacity Conference standard ground built on former playing fields, boasting warm-up pitches behind the main stand as well as East Cheshire Harriers' athletics facilities.

For Cllr Dave Sweeton, the council's project head for sport and recreation, the ground is part of their bid to improve sporting facilities for Tamesiders.

He said: "We want to utilise it to its full capacity and let the community use it. We want to see a lot of community-based activity for kids, adults, 16 to 18-year-olds who would normally give up sport.

"There's also a new green paper we're analysing which fits in with the council strategy on facilities, what we can do for young people, addressing obesity and saying they have nothing to do. They need quality facilities."

Would Ashton United want to move into a ground that seems to me, according to the article, as being very overused.. How good will the pitch be when it comes to febuary? hmm.. im not convinced its such a good thing..

The main issue seems to be the social club at AUFC which is the main source of revenue for the club. United need guarantees that that can stay in its present location before they will consider the move. It would be financial suicide not to do this, as the "bar" at the new ground would not be anywhere near the money spinner with it (as previously stated) being poorly advertised, poor public transport and being a long walk away from the nearest housing estate. Can anybody confirm that a new stand is to be built at the ground? I heard this rumour and wondered if it is true.

I hope AUFC can resolve the issue with the council as (no offence to Curzon) but I feel (contrary to the previous post) that the facility is completely underused. It holds at least 4000 yet when are there every anymore than 150 people in it? I'm not saying that AUFC are going to bring 2000 with them or anything but we are in a higher league and so could raise the profile a little. We shall see what happens I guess.
