Thornton’s triumph

Rugby Union

ASHTON failed to kickstart their season as they lost 18-15 against fellow strugglers Thornton Cleveleys on Saturday.

After Richard Mooney missed an early penalty, Ashton saw their opponents lead with a penalty and try.

Mooney's penalty reduced the gap before the seasiders then added a second try before Paul Emery scored in the corner for Ashton following a penalty kicked to the corner.

The second half brought a dull midfield struggle until Thornton scored again following a series of rucks near the line.

However, Ashton were handed a potential lifeline with seven minutes remaining as Dominic Maher went over from 30 yards for a converted try to cut the deficit.

The visitors were in no mood to surrender the points though as the game fizzled out with no real chance of an Ashton comeback.

Aldwinians won their most important game of the season so far, 21-16 against Workington, in their bid to escape the lower end of the North Lancs/Cumbria League.

After an early exchange of penalties, they were in front throughout and led 13-3 at the break with a Bamber penalty and conversion of Gidman's try.

The second half saw Aldwinians initially struggle to produce the same amount of pressure.

Further penalties were swapped before Workington made it 16-9 on 70 minutes.

However, James Worrall's 75th minute try made it 21-9 but Workington added a late converted try to reduce the deficit.
