Glossop North End boss Steve Young has turned to a familiar face in his attempt to give the Hillmen a greater cutting edge up front.

Young has brought striker Garry Kharas back into the fold at Surrey Street after five seasons away.

Kharas netted 77 times in just under three seasons during his first spell with North End, hitting five hat-tricks along the way before John Reed took him to Stalybridge Celtic during 2005/06.

However, he failed to establish himself at Bower Fold and moved to Ashton United before then settling at New Mills.

Young said: "The plan was to get Garry this summer but he’s come in with 20 league games left instead.

"I know what he can bring to this club; we know what he’s all about which is goals so we’re really happy to have him back with us.

"What it means is that along with Andy Hurst, we’ve now got two strikers who scored 33 goals and 28 goals for their respective sides last season.

"We can’t deny that we’ve needed to score more goals because when you look at the scoring charts we have one of the best defences, but in terms of goals scored we’re in mid-table so that’s definitely an area we can improve on.

"Now we’ve done that it gives me a chance to look elsewhere because if you stand still with the squad you’ve got, then you go backwards."

Kharas was set to make his second debut for the club on Wednesday evening when Padiham were the visitors to Surrey Street.

It continues a hectic run of fixtures for Young’s side until the end of the season.

"I can see the season being extended into May," said Young. "The league hasn’t said anything yet but given the amount of games left, I think we might go into the first week."
