AFC Telford Utd 1
Stalybridge Celtic 0

CELTIC slipped to seventh in the table as Telford extended their incredible run to just one defeat in 22 matches after an absorbing clash at the New Bucks Head.

Steve Burr’s men failed to trouble the scorer for the first time in 14 starts, but probably deserved to take something from the game after defending heroically for most of the 90 minutes.

A lapse in concentration just nine minutes from time cost the visitors dearly.

Lee Moore, who had been a thorn in Celtic’s side all afternoon, whipped in a cross and when the otherwise excellent Barrie Keeling failed to clear his lines, the ball broke to substitute Jimmy Turner eight yards out.

He lost control momentarily but recovered to bury a crisp shot in the bottom right-hand corner and Celtic were defeated for only the second time on their travels.

Burr had showed his respect for the hosts by setting his team up to contain rather than attack and it was a policy that almost bore fruit, particularly in the 10 minutes just after half-time when Steve Torpey twice went close.

The first half had been something akin to a chess match as both sides jockeyed for position.

Telford's best chances fell to Moore and Andy Brown, both of whom were thwarted by excellent stops by Paul Phillips, while at the other end Ryan Young tipped over a 20-yarder from the returning Keith Briggs and Andy Smart fizzed a fierce free kick just wide.
