High Court victory for Hyde United

JUBILANT Hyde United are celebrating their greatest-ever victory after winning their High Court appeal against being wound up.

And, as an added bonus, the Tigers have also been cleared to carry on playing in the FA Cup, with their delayed second qualifying-round tie with Salford City now pencilled in to take place at Ewen Fields tonight (Monday).

The winners will entertain Blyth Spartans.

Hyde received the news they’d been praying for after raising £35,000 in less than a week to allow them to pay off a £122,000 tax bill and so convince the court to rescind the winding-up order they’d previously been hit with.

Among those who helped the 90-year-old Blue Square North outfit’s cause were Manchester City fans, who donated £7,800 to a bucket collection held at the Blues’ Premier League clash with West Ham.

Tigers director Tony Beard said: “It’s fantastic that we’re officially back in business and we’d like to say a huge thank-you to all those who have helped us through this most perilous of times.

“The fact we chose to pay off the debt rather than enter administration means we’ve come out of this crisis with an unblemished record and no points deducted. It’s a huge relief.”

I remember well the events of 1986/7 when it was first put forward that the Club should sell its ground to Tameside Council and rent it back (yes I was involved with the Club back then ...) and a great number of people said at the time that it was a bad move ........and sadly the chickens did come home to roost didnt they ?, but I am glad they have survived ... at least for the time being .....
