Mossley 0 Newcastle Blue Star 5: MOSSLEY finished a very distant second in their league clash with high-spending title challengers Newcastle Blue Star on Saturday, shipping five goals and making few notable goalscoring chances of their own.

With current goalkeeper Andy Robertson suspended for three games, Lilywhites manager Chris Willcock had to find a replacement and signed Ashley Connor.

Connor, who had been the Mossley keeper last season, must have had a feeling of déjà vu about the whole afternoon despite the different faces who were playing in front of him.

The first goal was a little unfortunate as Connor spread himself at the feet of Brayson to make a save, only to see the loose ball squirm out to the right where full-back Darren Craddock clipped it across goal for the ball to go in off the top of the far post.

The visitors then notched their second goal of the afternoon within a minute through David McTiernan.

Brayson got his reward before the break, sliding the ball under the advancing Connor, but Mitch Bailey should have cleared it as it bobbled towards goal.

Whatever words of wisdom were handed out Chris Willcock at half-time did not work as Newcastle scored their fourth goal within 60 seconds of the restart as Chris Emms’ solo effort evaded defenders and went over the keeper.

Ten minutes later, Brayson dragged Connor out of his goal and from virtually on the byline, chipped the ball over his head, and from an impossible angle, it dropped inside the far post.

The last half-hour saw Newcastle relax and a more even contest take place, but the only real effort Mossley produced was a cross from Cook which Fish headed into the keeper’s midriff.
