Shock loss for reigning champs

A shock result in the Ashton and Oldham Cricket Alliance last weekend saw defending champions Friends beaten by a Heyside 3rd team which gained maximum points.

Heyside batted first and made 280-9 thanks to excellent contributions from John McLoughlin (92) and Steve Partington (74).

Best of the bowlers for Friends were Nadeem, who took 4-50, and Mohsin, who ended with 4-68.

Although Mohsin then made a fine innings of 93 in reply, Friends were dismissed for 190 as they struggled against Michael Drew, who ended with 7-58 to give his team a 90-run victory.

At Europa Exiles the home side batted first against Newtonhurst and struggled to reach 62 all out.

Andy Hodgson was their top scorer with 24 as Newtonhurst’s Karl Stone recorded figures of 3-28.

However, an exciting finish saw Newtonhurst skittled for 57, Mike Boone top-scoring for them with 21.

Richard Lawrence ended with 5-10 and Hodgson followed up his batting exploits with 4-20.

Graham Smith chipped in with half-a-dozen catches to give Europa maximum points.

Greengate had a good win at home to St Mary’s HC who batted first and made 123 all out.

Matthew Woods and Neil Laurence both batted well for St Mary’s, compiling 37 and 32 respectively.

Tom Nixon was the best of the Greengate bowlers as he returned figures of 4-15.

In reply, Greengate reached their target with five wickets still in hand as they replied with 124-5.

Martin Wrigley and John Fairclough both led the way for Greengate with unbeaten innings of 37, while Richard Jackson also chipped in with another 24.

Lee Tuite was the best of the St Mary’s bowlers, ending with figures of 3-18, but he was unable to prevent Greengate from taking maximum points.
