GRIEVING families have formed an action group to take Tameside Hospital to force an independent inquiry over allegations of patient neglect.
The scandal-hit hospital made national news after a coroner slammed its care of the elderly as 'despicable and chaotic.'
During four inquests in one day, relatives told of patients being left unwashed, unfed and uncared for.
Now Tameside Hospital Action Group, together with Ashton MP David Heyes and backed by the Tameside Advertiser, is calling for the government to carry out an independent inquiry.
They are urging others to get in touch if they have had bad experiences.
Mr Heyes said: "We believe there are, at the very least, hundreds of people who have had tragic experiences as a result of treatment at Tameside Hospital.
"Furthermore, there is a very strong feeling that an internal hospital inquiry is not the relevant way forward if we are going to restore public confidence in the hospital.
"It's not every ward by any means; it does seem to be predominantly where it's elderly people, and rarely is it a complaint about the medical or surgical treatment, it's about aftercare.
"The hospital management always say there is not a staff shortage but in each of the cases we have heard there is."
Families already involved include Ivor Davies, son of 84-year-old Watkin Davies who contracted MRSA after an abscess was left covered in excrement.
The war veteran was also left to starve, Ivor claims, and had begged his son to take him home.
"This isn't an issue of compensation," he said.
"If we can save people from going through what my father went through then it would be a success story."
Mr Heyes has written to the hospital and is in talks with government health minister Andy Burnham.
The action group now wants to hear from anyone who has had or is having a bad experience at Tameside Hospital.

Mr Hayes if you read this press the government for correctly directed funding for the hospitals to provide nursing care. This means Monies for more nurses. Pay rises for the Nurses not pay cuts.
Mr Hayes i know that you see this as a politiacl platform to make yourself look good in the eyes of the people of tameside so do something constructive not distructive. Instead of waisting the money on an inquiry put the money to better use. Use the memory of these people to provide sponsorship bursaries for nurses . Sponser nurses to work at Tameside. Ask local industries to sponser nurses and get more nurses on the wards. Then you will see thses problems of alledged patient neglect dissapear. Please refrain from constantly battering the hospital Moral is already low. Show some possitives so that Tameside can attract the nurses it needs.
Good nurses will not want to work in a hospital that is constantly being slated. COme on Mr Hayes look for some possitives promote the good at Tameside. Its easy to to make a hospital unatractive to staff its hard to retain and recrut staff into a hospital which is contantly being run down.
Lets get something possitive to come out of the sadness.
Mr Hayes support your nurses at Tameside they vote too you know.
