Council unveils £1.5m plan for Ashton town centre

Council bosses have unveiled a £1.5million scheme to improve Ashton town centre.

The plan aims to develop the town into defined 'quarters' which will be linked by landscaped walkways and streets.

The project follows hot on the heels of £1.2m planned improvements to Hyde town centre and work already underway in Droylsden.

It forms part of Tameside council's vision for the town centre to develop its historic and modern features to boost its 'vitality' and 'viability'.

Coun David Sweeton, executive member for business and community development, said: “Ashton is a distinct and busy town and is faring comparatively well during these hard economic times, but it’s important it develops to ensure it continues to thrive and meet future shopping and business needs.”

Coun Peter Robinson, executive member for transport and development, added: “The new vision aims to ensure Ashton’s future remains bright - it will take the town centre forward to increase the number of shoppers and visitors and enhance their experience, improve access, promote a safe and clean environment and secure the long-term growth and sustainability of the town.”

Yet another example of shutting the gate when the horse has bolted.
Tameside ...full of buffons council.
M & S has already made the decision to move, its imminant, why throw good tax payers money away, on what will prove to be another white elephant.
The metro link which is going to eventually travel to Ashton U Lyne will have maked up for its destination 'The Road to Nowhere'

If Tameside council really want to make a difference to the town centre they should start by removing all of the lazy, chavy, benefit scroungers that hang around Ashton town centre. I quite frankly would be embarassed to have tourists coming to Ashton on the metrolink so they can see a townfull of Vicky Pollards walking around town with 3 children in a pram, another on the way and a fag in the mouth or the gangs of hoodlums who cause trouble....I think no matter what you do with Ashton it will always look terrible because of the lowlife people that spend time there, I just feel sorry for the elderly and hard-working people who have to live amongst them!

No surprise vast amounts of money is spent on the two Towns knowing that the Ashton and Hyde Councillors dominate the Councils Cabinet.
