Campaigners see red in bypass protest

About 70 people turned out along the busy road on Wednesday morning to demonstrate why they think a bypass is necessary.
Bypass campaigners brought traffic to a halt when they continually pressed the pedestrian crossing buttons along the A57 and A628.

About 70 people turned out along the busy road on Wednesday morning to demonstrate why they think a bypass is necessary.

In Mottram, Hollingworth and Tintwistle different groups pressed the button over and over again before crossing in front of queues of cars and lorries.

And despite slowing down an already slow route, none of the campaigners got any abuse.

Mike Flynn of the Longdendale Siege Committee said: "We got lots of support from the people who were driving. They were all putting their thumbs up and shouting encouragement to us and we go no abuse whatsoever, only support.

"I think it was very successful and we were very pleased with how it came off."

The group wants to raise awareness of the ongoing traffic problems along the A57 between the end of the M67 and the trans-Pennine routes.

Members believe a bypass would help to reduce the amount of traffic thundering through the villages of Mottram, Hollingworth and Tintwistle every day. But the plans have been repeatedly delayed and changed and it remains uncertain as to whether any form of bypass will ever get the go-ahead.

Although the traffic came to a standstill during the protest in Mottram and in the centre of Hollingworth, a fire off the A628 near Sheffield led to road closures which reduced the amount of westbound traffic at Tintwistle. But the campaigners are planning another demonstration early next month on a Friday and hope to have even more of an impact.

Mr Flynn said: "At the moment the date we've got planned in November 5, so we're hoping that will go off with a bang!"

I have said for years the area needed a by pass and I sympathise greatly with the residents.
Moreso on the environmental issue damage is being caused that may become irritrievable such as pollution and subsidence therefore I think Mr Cameron should immediately put this item on his agenda.
Good luck to Mr Flynn and all the other people involved because they deserve all the support they can get....

Amazing that Mr M.Flynn chose to keep completely well away from the large ByPass Public Inquiry, where he could have found volumes of facts which he still does not know, including the Highways Agency and Tameside Council spent in excess of £25 million over three years work to simply provide and produce the required evidence for a ByPass, and after the Public Inquiry was stop started over a period of "two years" to allow the HA/TMBC to get their facts and evidence correct, the HA/TMBC took the decision they could not comply with the Public Inquiry requirements which required error free evidence and the Public Inquiry was halted after the HA/TMBC pulled out.
What Mr Flynn fails to address is the thousands of extra vehicles and HGV`s which will also thunder a;long the M67,on route to the M60 Junction 24 which is one of the most traffic congested regions in the UK having at present in excess of 330,000 daily traffic volumes passing through the Tameside Districts of Denton/Audenshaw and its 47,000 residents but of course the MEN never ever mentions the increased large impact on the M67/M60 and those who live as close as 60 metres from pollution hundreds of times more than ever experienced
in Longendale.
So why is the MEN showing the persistant references to Longendale problems where 9,000
reside in a wide large expansive, rural landscape region with single lane slow moving traffic, when we get 24 lanes of traffic stuffing vast volumes of toxins into the lungs of 47,000.
When will a level playing field and the overall facts be brought to the electorate of Tameside
by the MEN and cease the seemingly biased approach to this issue, because why stuff large extra volumes of traffic fumes into our lungs because of a ByPass

Perhaps Longdendale Siege would like to explain why there was very sparse traffic heading towards Longdendale from both the M67 and the A57 at Glossop (nothing to do with a fire near Sheffield BTW). The evidence is on our blog for all to see. If they need to set off pedestrian crossings to cause traffic jams then it suggests the jams are not there in the first place. So what exactly are they campaigning for? If the traffic jams do exist at 9.00 a.m. in the morning, then why the need to activate pedestrian crossings? What difference did it make? The evidence suggests none at all. Normal traffic, to which the protest added very little. http://nomottrambypass.blogspot.com/2010/10/longdendale-sieges-dismal-protest.html
