A family fun day inspired by a little girl’s fight against leukaemia is set to raise money to help others like her.
On Saturday hundreds of people will gather at the Silver Springs pub in Denton to raise money for charity.
The day is inspired by Abbie Moore who was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia last summer at the age of seven, just days after her family noticed an unusual swelling in her tummy.
"We’d just come back from Cyprus and were on top of the world," said Abbie’s mum, Kerry.
"We’d found somewhere to live, a friend was going to rent out our house here, and my husband was taking voluntary redundancy so we could all move out there. We’d left the girls with my mum and her partner and when we came back, she said Abbie’s belly had become swollen and hard like a football."
They took her to see her GP the next day and were immediately sent to hospital where she was diagnosed with the cancer the same day.
The leukaemia will never be cured, but modern medication means Abbie, who turns eight at the end of March, can keep up with her identical twin sister, Charlie, and little sister, Brooke, and can go to school, play with friends and follow her favourite team, Manchester United.
Between 1pm and 6pm this Saturday, families can go along to the Ashton Road pub for face painting and fairground rides and then in the evening, the adults take over with chest waxing, head shaves and an auction of goodies including signed items from Manchester City, Gordon Ramsay, Simply Red and other treats donated by local businesses. Everyone is welcome to help raise money for CLIC Sargent, the Leukaemia Research Fund and When You Wish Upon A Star.
Later in the month, Abbie’s local police officers are holding their own auction of a signed Manchester United football and an Alex Ferguson signed picture, donated by the club when they heard Abbie’s story. To buy a ticket for the raffle to win the ball or the picture call PC Ian Rowley on 07766 994985.
