Raids are being carried out this morning across Greater Manchester as the police carry out a major operation to combat drink-fuelled violence.

Operation Portcullis will see warrants being executed on every division within the Force area as officers hunt down criminals responsible for alcohol-fuelled violent assaults and those who have jumped bail and are on the run.

More than 150 people had been arrested by lunchtime.

We'll be providing live coverage of the operation here throughout the day.

Reporters Helen Johnson and Kathryn Ryan are accompanying police on raids in Rochdale and Salford respectively, and Dean Kirby is at GMP headquarters - they'll be sending live updates via Twitter.

While I think it's a good initiative, I'd also like to read about shopkeepers/retailers being 'lifted' for selling alcohol, cigarettes and 'weapons' to under-age kids - now that would be a further step in the right direction.

All very well this, but out of all the people arrested, how many wil receive custodial sentences? Very few I think, they will either be released or receive Community Service orders. Police are doing a great job but are not backed up by the courts.

G.M.P. done this with the terrorists and had to let them all go, G.M.P. ended up with egg on their faces. out of the 100 they arrest today you will find as little as about 5 will be charged, oh dear G.M.P more bills for all the doors you smashed this morning...

Another great story to give the Cop kickers something to winge about.

Give them some credit for once they are out there and doing something lets wait and see what the end result is...

This, I believe constitutes a search, I hope the Police act within the law and complete a stop and search form for everyone who passes through these detectors.

I was asked last year to pass through on of these at Piccadilly station and refused. You don't have to submit to a search unless the Police have good reason.

Stand up for liberty and against the advance of a Police state. Refuse to be searched routinely.

Yes, they have to do these raids because they are not on the streets of the city centre at night, to prevent it happening in the first place. But I suppose something is being done.

Another P.R. stunt, where they could and should have made arrests sooner, but wanted to do it en masse for the cameras, as if they're effectively tacking crime.

Why don't journalists ask: "If so many people needed arresting, why did you wait to do it all at once? Surely they didn't all commit the crimes yesterday?"

I Will Never, Ever give them credit, if they want a raid a house in a drink related incident why kick the doors in and use wham rams, is the person going to tip cans of drink down the sink, I think not. Police should cover the house back and front and take the softly softly approach. and if they done the homework good he or she would be in. but they boot doors down to find they are frightning little children scared and grannys in bed, result at the end NOTHING..... probation or community service when they get caught... to heavy handed the police, they are the thugs....Get a grip Mr Fahey..

Theowolfe - I would be happy to pass through a metal detector as I have nothing to hide. You are the type of person who would allow the thugs of society to quite easily pass by hiding weapons to use on others. Maybe you would change your mind if you ever became the victim of one of these thugs.

I'm sorry but it's not a very good PR stunt to say "oh we've finaly cought up all these people". Not all advertising is good advertising, regardless of what the PR firms will tell you. If none of these people end up being convicted of anything at least they know they're being monitored. It sends the right message to these people.
Oh and one more thing:
You need to have a lot of respect for our boys in blue who put it on the line for you on a daily basis.
