A FAMILY cremated the wrong body after a mix-up at a hospital mortuary.
Instead of saying farewell to their loved one, the coffin contained the body of great-grandmother Marion Greenwood whose dying wish was to be buried next to her husband and son.
The terrible blunder was revealed when her family’s funeral director arrived at Tameside General Hospital to pick up the body.
Grandson Mark Andrews, 42, from Ashton under Lyne, said: “We just can’t believe this has happened. It has devastated the whole family.” Mrs Greenwood’s ashes are now locked away at Dukinfield Crematorium. Her relatives have been told they will not be able to have them until an investigation is complete.
Grandson's heartbreak over cremation mix-up
Hospital bosses offered an ‘unreserved’ apology to both families and launched an immediate probe. A mortuary worker has been suspended while the investigation takes place.
Mrs Greenwood, who had two children and lived in a nursing home in Ashton, had been ill for several months.
She was taken to Tameside General and died on January 11.
We understand the family’s funeral director went to pick up her body seven days later but was turned away by mortuary staff.
The following day a member of the hospital’s trust board went to visit Mrs Greenwood’s daughter Susan, who is in her seventies and also lives in Ashton.
The board member explained to her what had happened. Susan then had to break the news to her horrified family and cancel arrangements for the funeral, which was due to take place two days later at the Hurst Methodist Church on Curzon Road.
Now Mr Andrews and his relatives want to trace the family who cremated his grandmother’s body to discuss the terrible mistake. The hospital did not reveal what had happened to the other body.
A hospital spokeswoman said: “The trust is looking into a recent incident in which the wrong deceased patient was released from its mortuary to funeral directors. This is the first time an incident of this type has occurred at the hospital.
“This incident occurred in spite of the fact that mortuary procedures at the hospital conform to nationally-defined standards, have recently been overhauled and are subject to period audits.
“Once the trust became aware of this incident it acted immediately.
“Initial investigations suggest a failure to follow the identification protocol within the mortuary at the time the funeral directors collected the body of the deceased patient.
“A full investigation is proceeding and a member of staff has been suspended.
“We wish to offer our unreserved apologies to the families of the deceased patients involved.”

The MP informed me he will no longer represent me or respond in any way,and I should move away from the area.
Now the issues concerned were serious situations affecting the electorate of Tameside regarding a variety of deplorable situations.
My MP well knows I could more than prove the many not fit for purpose administrators in Tameside need culling, and if ever "real open public forum debates" were held the real facts would immerge, however whether it be contrived District Assembly meetings or a lack of local press coverage our democracy in Tameside has been seriously eroded to zero, thanks to a close knit cartel covering up, who are spread across many organisations.
I would never issue comments which were not 100% accurate, confirmed and proven facts, should any
Tamesider wish to disagree by declaring his/her proper name and whether they are part of the many administrations who control our lives.

My heart and thoughts go with the families involved, I can't even begin to imagine what they are going through.

If I gave the specific facts the details would be blocked by the MEN,and thats how the system works,
but you obviously don`t have that knowledge.

I was in Tameside in 2002 with a problem with my insides leaking blood. . I was diagnosed with having simple flu like symptoms and sent home. 3 weeks later i was in ICU (Intensive Care unit).
At Christmas 2008 I had a reoccurance of this and in the space of 9 days i was sent home no more than 4 times. The level of care at Tameside is absolutely shocking as as I said on my previous thread, I'm very reluctant at the best of times to head there even with it being on my doorstep.

Although I dont believe the hospital are the only ones to blame. I cant understand how any undertaker can manage to cremate the wrong person. Surely they have to check they have the right body. I mean, do undertakers not have protocols on things like this? this undertaker obviously doesnt, disgusting. They shouldnt be allowed to trade.

Mrs Jammy, Sitting on the settee
This is the nature of our market driven, rather than quality driven ecconomy Mrs Jammy. It is why one couple can be allocated 148 different "carers" , when the reality is that no one cares at all.

There could be many reasons for this mistake, but I
would rather have this then the living be involved.
Mixing up drugs, wrong operations etc.
You can be mixed up at birth and at death.
No-one goes out of their way to do this.
