A MOSSLEY soldier was killed in an explosion in southern Afghanistan on Sunday.
Corporal Joey Etchells, aged 22, was serving as an infantry section commander in Sangin in Helmand, Afghanistan, leading eight soldiers in A company of the second battalion of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers on frontline operations.
In report in the Advertiser last month he said: “It’s a great job and a big responsibility to have out here but I really enjoy it,” he said. “I can’t see myself ever wanting to do anything else.”
He attended Mossley Hollins High School, developing a taste for sport and running and joined the Army at 16. Two years later, after NVQs at the Army Foundation College in Harrogate and the infantry training course in Catterick, he was patrolling Belfast during the marching season.
Corporal Etchells had a fiancée and a baby daughter.
He was described by colleagues as a born leader.

How sad that Tameside Council do not feel it is appropriate to let the Town Hall Flag in Mossley fly at half mast. So much for a caring council.
