JAMES Purnell has claimed ‘very strong’ support in his constituency after his shock decision to quit the cabinet nearly toppled Gordon Brown.
The Stalybridge and Hyde MP stood down as work and pensions secretary on Thursday amid rumours of a Blairite plot against the prime minister.
In his resignation letter, he called on Mr Brown to step down so that Labour could win the next election. But key allies failed to follow suit and Mr Brown survived after telling Labour MPs on Monday he would ‘learn from his mistakes’.
Mr Purnell’s decision sparked outrage among some local party members. But he predicted there would be no moves by his constituency Labour party (CLP) to deselect him before the next election. And he revealed he had spoken to two senior members of the CLP to tell them what he was doing BEFORE he called Mr Brown.
Mr Purnell promised to be a more active constituency MP and said he had been inundated with messages of support.
"People have been stopping me in the street and shouting out of car windows," he said. "I have spoken to loads of people in the CLP and I have had very strong support. Some people have disagreed with what I did, but in a very good-natured way."
Mr Purnell said he had discussed with the prime minister ‘over the past few months’ the direction the government was taking.
But he did not tell him about his decision to quit until ‘a quarter to 10’ on Thursday night – when the news was already breaking. He did, however, tell the chairman and secretary of the CLP ‘just before’ he told Mr Brown.
"In an ideal world I would have had a party meeting but I wanted the news to come out after the polls closed," he added.
Mr Purnell said he was proud of what a Labour government had achieved for Stalybridge and Hyde – and said he intended to refocus on being an active local MP.
"I will be supporting the government but most of all I will be working hard in my constituency," he said. "That can get a bit lost in cabinet and I am looking forward to seeing people face-to-face, and having coffee mornings and roving surgeries. There are some big things that I want to do, like seeing through the Mottram-Tintwistle by-pass, reducing over-crowding on trains, getting more of my constituents to university, and regenerating Hyde town centre."
Mr Purnell’s decision to stand down followed hot on the heels of similar moves by Hazel Blears, the former communities secretary, and Home secretary Jacqui Smith. That sparked rumours of a coup –– but Mr Purnell said he had not discussed his plans with other colleagues.
"It was not a plot," he said. "I was saying what I had to say to be true to myself."
Mr Purnell said other senior ‘Blairites’ who did not follow his lead – including David Miliband and Andy Burnham – retained his ‘full support’.
"I am not saying they did the wrong thing," he said.
"I completely respect colleagues who took a different view – people with similar values and commitment to the Labour party. I do not regret saying what I said, but I also intend to be loyal from the backbenches. I am not going to become a public critic about what the government has done wrong."

Get over yourself Mr Purnell. There are more serious issues in this country than you, you, you.

in expenses and when you add that to his salary as a minister plus "other earnings" it seems to me that he costs us a little too much. Was our James in favour of living wages for firemen or nurses?.. No he was not. He didn't think they were worth just 30k a year- after all they only save lives. His job........?well...let's just see what his support turns out to be in the next election shall we, when WE decide what HIS worth really is.
do go away you tiresome little man.

re Jimmy Purnell, simply prove it David Ottewell.
We all know of all the allegiances to the Tameside MP,but rhetoric should not be utilised as FACT.
Lets have headlines appropriate to reality or declare any agenda with headlines like that.

I received a letter last week from the Prime Minister and Leader of the Labour Party, Rt Hon Gordon Brown MP.
In his letter the Prime Minister says, “I know that the people are angry about MPs’ expenses. I apologise-on behalf of all parties-that the political system has let you and the public down. Whatever party they belong to, MPs should never have spent taxpayers’ money on cleaning their moats or swimming pools, or paying phantom mortgages-and it’s even worse at a time when ordinary families are worried about the impact of the recession.
Labour are determined to put things right – not through words, but through action. This is not a time for papering over the cracks – it’s time for root and branch reform. And it’s not just a question of paying back money. That’s why Labour have suspended MPs who are suspected of wrongdoing.”
I accept that the Prime Minister is determined to put things right. I would have also expected our local Member of Parliament James Purnell to accept that his leader is determined to put things right. But by resigning from the cabinet and publicly stating that he has no confidence in Gordon Brown.is despicable and totally disloyal
Because of James Purnell’s disrespect for his constituents and the Labour Party, his
position as our local MP is untenable.
Yours sincerely,
Ted Connolly

I am led to believe that there is some sort of "selection" meeting with James Purnell and the Stalybridge and Hyde CLP exec tonight.
As Mr. Purnell said to Gordon Brown:
"I now believe your continued leadership makes a Conservative victory more, not less likely."
Well you could say the same for James Purnell. With him as MP, it is certainly giving away votes to the local Conservative party.

Roy Oldham has more faces than the town hall clock,
whatever he writes or says, should be taken with a pinch of salts ...and the sooner this country gets a conservative government, the sooner we'll be back on track.

You can bet eggs are eggs that a Conservative Government will be returned at the next General Election ...and not before time too.
As far as this area is concerned ...Tameside, no doubt the my "Father voted for them, so i'm going to follow suit Lemmings" will return another NuLab plonker to do zilch for the area.

When former Works and Pensions James Purnell resigned from the Cabinet earlier this month because of his failed attempt to remove Gordon Brown as Prime Minister, he promised he would give his full time to work hard for the interests of his constituents.
Then you read the headlines in the Mail on Sunday, “Rebel Purnell uses Blairite think-tank to attack Brown,” At the local Labour Party meeting on the 12th June, which Mr Purnell attended, he promised the members that he would have more time now that he had resigned from the Cabinet and he would give his full time to work hard in the interests of his constituents. The members gave him a second chance and they took him at his word. It would seem that their loyalty was misplaced.
When the General Election comes around in the next year, I will find it difficult to vote for James Purnell whose promises mean nothing. The only way I would vote Labour would be if Mr Purnell was de-selected. It hurts me to hold this view because I have voted Labour all my life.
Yours sincerely,
Ted Connolly. Newton, Hyde.

In March 30, 2007, the headlines in the Manchester Evening News were, “Scandal hit hospital condemned.”
Amanda Crook (Health reporter for the MEN) was referring to a report made by Prof Dame Pauline Fielding and Liz Craig, on Tameside General Hospital.
Ms Crook went onto report, “A scandal hit hospital failed to give some elderly patients basic care, including food, water and hygiene, according to an independent report.
Bosses at Tameside General Hospital have been given a year to sort out problems or face losing their jobs.”
In July 16, 2009, the headlines in the Advertiser were, “Hospital must try to restore our confidence.”
Cheryl Goodwin, who heads Tameside Hospital Action Group, (THAG) wrote in the Advertiser last week, “Once again Tameside Hospital is in the national news having issued an apology for serial failures in the care of a patient whose death was attributed by relatives to chaotic care by overburdened staff.”
Prof Dame Pauline Fielding and Liz Craig’s report, stipulated a 12 month period for their recommendation to be carried out. Obviously the bosses at the hospital have failed to do this. Because of their neglect to carry out the recommendations laid down, they should resign.
I would like to thank the Ashton under Lyne MP David Heyes and his staff, Cheryl Goodwin, (THAG) for their hard work on our behalf.
Yours sincerely,
Ted Connolly.
