Real-life wings of love brought wedded bliss to a young couple’s ‘Harry Potter’ style wedding.
Barn owl Fudge delivered their wedding rings in a black silk bag by flying over the heads of more than 60 guests to land on the groom’s arm.
Sian Davies and Craig Wilson married in a glittering ceremony at the White Hart at Lydgate, near Oldham.
The couple, who live in Bury Street, Mossley, sealed their vows in front of their families and friends with an exchange of rings.
And the unique event was witnessed by the couple’s own very special guest of honour – their pet Staffordshire bull terrier, Cracker, dressed in red bow tie and black tails.
After several commands from Craig, Fudge flew from the bride’s cousin, Helen Chadsfield’s arm, to the glove on his arm more than 30ft away.
Craig, 34, said: "The falconry glove was a perfect landing pad for Fudge – I wasn’t a bit scared of catching her. I love animals and wildlife. I put a safety tag on her while I cut the cord holding the bag to her leg, removed the rings, then released her and she flew straight back to her keeper Helen. People may have thought it was a bit mad at first but it was certainly different and it really worked well."
Bride Sian, a 25-year-old legal secretary, said: "I wanted something different, romantic and special on my wedding day. Fudge behaved inpeccably. Craig and I both love animals – we have three cats in addition to Cracker – and we wanted to have something really unusual on our wedding day so we would have extra strong memories."
Helen Chadfield, has an aviary and falconry centre in Bath, and she travelled more than 150 miles carrying Fudge to the event in a special box.
Sian added: "Fudge had delivered rings at an open air wedding in Scotland but we were not sure how things would go with the ceremony being conducted inside a country inn. But there were no hitches."
Registrar Bridget Gent, said: "I have never conducted a wedding with an owl. It certainly is a unique way to seal your vows."
Explaining the reason for including their pet dog, Craig said: "We just couldn’t leave him out. He is part of our lives and goes everywhere with us."
