A MUM whose teenage son was killed in a motorbike accident has reached a milestone in her campaign for better roads.

Callum Hughes, 16, died instantly when his moped hit a pothole on Bayley Street, Stalybridge and he slid into the path of an oncoming lorry.

Since his death in 2003, mum Roseanne Kay has fought for improvements to be made and recently handed a petition of more than 4,000 signatures to MP James Purnell.

Mr Purnell, who has promised to pass it on to Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon, met Roseanne at the spot where Callum died.

"I felt very comfortable speaking to James because I could see he was deeply touched about what had happened to Callum and was genuinely interested in how the family has coped," she said."I told James that Callum should never have died and how easily his death could have been avoided. I also told him about the wonderful person Callum was, how important education was to him and how much he had wanted to try to make the world a better place."

Callum, a talented student, was riding the scooter to college for the first time, having bought L-plates the night before.

Roseanne, of Forester Drive, Stalybridge, added: "I know I can’t bring Callum back but I can try to stop his death being in vain and I would like to thank everybody who has supported me with the campaign. I just hope that the petition brings change and stops councils failing in their duty to keep roads properly maintained."
