Hero cop risked life to stop drunken dad blowing up house in Droylsden

A hero cop risked his life to prevent a gas blast which could have killed him and two children.

Pc Philip Sutcliffe, 34, ran into the home in Droylsden to find the oven door open, all the gas appliances switched on and piping behind the cooker ripped from the wall. He could hear loud hissing as the property filled with gas.

A court was told that a spark could easily have caused a blast at the address in Droylsden and a potential disaster was only avoided by a quick-thinking police officer who bravely went inside and turned off the supply.

A woman spent more than an hour in agony impaled on an iron gate. Emergency workers gave the 28-year-old strong painkillers before lifting her off the four-inch spike at the perimeter of Hyde Park in Hyde.
