Bowls news, with Frank Quigley and Jamie Bramley

THE Stockport Parks and Friday Night League’s presentation evening has taken place at Great Moor Conservative Club.

President Frank Quigley handed out the prizes and trophies. The A Division championship went to Heaton Norris Park, with Dennis Evans receiving the trophy. Runners-up were South Reddish Park.

The B division was won by Burnage Village Garden. Runners-up were Shaw Heath Park.

The eight-a-side Ben Dawson Trophy was won by Heaton Norris, and Terry Gale collected the trophy. Runners-up were Love Lane.

The Stockport Pairs trophy went to Jack and Jamie Bramley (Love Lane), with Colin Alcock and Brian Thorley (Great Moor) taking runners-up spot.

The Singles Merit was won by Dennis Evans (Heaton Norris) and runner-up was Ken Hailwood (Love Lane).

The Friday Night League presentation was carried out by President Eric Wild. A Division winners were Philips/ Friendship, with GMS the runners-up.

The League Average winner was Keith Tonge MBE (HGTBC).

B Division honours went to High Lane Con Club, with Leisure Services taking the runners-up spot.

The League Average winner was Ann Lockwood (High Lane CC).

The C Division was won by Hazel Grove Bowling and Tennis Club, while Didsbury Park took the runners-up spot. The League Average winner was Mike Clancy (High Lane CC).

The VP Cup was won by Woodley Sports, with the Royal Oak (Hazel Grove) the runners-up.

The George Kay Cup went to GMS, with Philips/Friendship runners-up.

The League Handicap was won by Graham Edwards.

  • MIKE Bacon won Sunday’s winter sweep at Stockport Cricket Club when he beat Ian Stokes 21-12 in the final.

    The Flyer was won by Mike Kelly.

    Tonight (Wednesday) sees the Stockport Parks/Cheshire Parks AGM take place at the Victoria Bowling Club on Webb Lane (7.30pm start).

    THE Stockport Veterans’ League has decided to reconstruct the divisional formats.

    The new proposal will see the current three divisions split into four, making less league games for all bowlers.

    Despite the promise of a round robin competition to fill the fixture gaps, some vets expressed displeasure at the move.

    Meanwhile, in the Stockport Indoor Bowling League there are some tantalising fixtures coming up this Sunday.

    The highlight of which will see Division One leaders Poynton host Bents Lane who are currently third.

    The side currently in second spot - Woodley - will also be at home against Avons.

    In division two the latest table shows St Albans top, ahead of Wythenshawe.

    Bents Lane B lead division three, while Cheadle A hold sway in division four.

  • A STOCKPORT side put in a solid effort in the Longdendale Bowling League. Royal Oak, from Hazel Grove, ended up gallant runners-up to George and Dragon Club from Hyde.

    It was a George and Dragon player who also took the league’s average prize.

    Colin Price was on fire all season.

  • THIS week there is some sad news following the death of well-known local character Frank Beeley.

    Frank, who was 65, was laid to rest at Stockport Crematorium last Thursday.
