PAUL Turnbull’s second half brace ensured County’s comfortable passage into the second round of the FA Cup.
In truth, any chance of an upset for the Ryman Premier side all but disappeared when Jamie Byatt failed to latch on to Simon Parker’s cross-shot at the far post with the goal gaping.
After that brief scare it took County just two minutes to open the scoring. Nicholas Bignall’s cross was cleared only as far Paul Turnbull on the edge of the box and after his shot had been saved by Dave King, Peter Thompson was on hand to turn in the rebound from close range.
After 20 minutes it was 2-0. Michael Rose and Michael Raynes combined before Rose slid the ball through to David Poole, who held off Byatt before finding the net via the inside of the far post.
Tooting almost found a way back into the game on 36 minutes but Aarron Goode’s downward header skidded just wide, and a minute later the tie was all but over.
A neat passing move on the halfway line involving Bignall and Poole eventually set Thompson free, and after he was hauled down in the box, Baker stepped up to smash home the resulting penalty.
With Tooting longing for the half-time whistle, County could have gone further ahead but King expertly saved Liam Bridcutt’s long-range effort and Baker could only clip the top of the bar from 12 yards.
The fourth goal did come after 67 minutes when David Poole was eventually released down the right, after County had retained the ball superbly, and his shot was parried into the path of Turnbull who made no mistake from 10 yards.
And after missing a gilt-edged chance less than a minute later, Turnbull added his second from the edge of the box, after Baker’s square ball, to round off the scoring.
