WOODLEY Sports boss Ally Pickering rued a clutch of missed chances as his side went down 4-2 at home to league leaders Newcastle Blue Star on Saturday.

Gavin Salmon and Matt Kerr had given the Steelmen an early 2-0 lead at Lambeth Grove, but Blue Star made the most of some questionable finishing from the hosts to run out comfortable victors.

Pickering said: "I’m disappointed because Newcastle had four chances and scored four goals.

"We matched them every step of the way and could quite conceivably have been 5-0 up at half-time, but our problem at the moment is that we’re just not scoring enough goals."

Woodley had an early chance to bounce straight back last night [Tues] when they hosted Ossett Albion in the league.

On Saturday it’s back to FA Cup action for Woodley after last Wednesday’s 2-0 preliminary round replay win at Brodsworth Welfare. They will now meet Rossendale United in the first qualifying round, at Abbey Hey’s ground in Gorton [3pm ko].

Russell Headley and Danny Queeley scored the goals at Brodsworth.

NEW Mills recorded their biggest-ever win in the FA Vase as they cruised through the first qualifying round with a 6-0 victory over Wolverhampton Casuals on Saturday. On target were Adam Mather, Garry Kharas [3, including one penalty], Josh Howard and Vinnie Braine. The Millers will play Leicestershire side Ellistown FC in the next round at Church Lane on September 20. Meanwhile, New Mills have signed Stockport County legend Mike Flynn. He was set to make his debut at last night’s trip to St Helens Town.

CHEADLE Town’s FA Vase game at Worsborough Bridge on Saturday was postponed. The game was re-arranged for last night. On Saturday Cheadle are at home to AFC Blackpool [3pm].
