The 18-year-old centre-half won rave reviews for his performance in County's 1-0 Manchester Senior Cup defeat to the Reds last Monday night.
And although he is yet to make his first-team debut for the Hatters, United reserve team boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was impressed enough to recommend the Liverpool-born starlet to Sir Alex Ferguson.
"Their skipper had a great game," said Solskjaer. "He's a strong centre-half who reads the game well and has good pace.
"I'll be recommending him to the gaffer."
Any move for Barnes - who was an unused substitute in Stockport's goalless League One draw with Gillingham on Saturday - would have to be given the green light by both County's administrators Leonard Curtis and manager Gary Ablett.
County's precarious financial position has already forced the club to sell a number of first-team regulars and with the Hatters' future still not secure, United may feel they can pinch Barnes - who is also said to be interesting Everton - on the cheap.
However, Ablett would be loathed to lose a prospect he regards as a future star at Edgeley Park.
"The lads were excellent against United and their staff were very impressed," said the County boss.
"But even if we do come out of administration there is not going to be a lot of money to spend and the club is going to have to rely on players like Sam to take the club forward."

We always buy or sign youngsters cheaply. Always have. Even in the bad old days of the plc, which you want to return us to. The picture of Ole should have been a reminder of that! Doh!
As for the lad, I've only seen him play the once and he looked reserve standard at least. We lack defenders at pretty much all levels of the club, so adding one at reserve level would be sensible. It would also help out a neighbour financially. However, I'm more concerned that we are not producing our own defenders in sufficient quantity. We've had to buy nearly all of our defensive prospects like Smalling, de Laet, McGinty, Wooton, etc. Only Jonny Evans, Reece Brown and Oliver Gill are home produced.

Yes Utd will get a bargain, based on the potential the lad has got, but then it's down to him to get the chances and develop into a class player.
All the prem teams do it and it's based on financial business agreements.
So realistically what is a Stockport reserve team player worth?

MG - Oh my, you're at it again. Don't you ever give it a rest? You'll skew any angle just to squeeze in your one-track-minded view of things, even when it turns out your beloved Solskjaer is in fact the one instigating this move: "I'll be recommending him to the gaffer" etc. Selective reading of the piece again?
Not too long ago you wrote: " Ole looks to be a superb coach to me. His understanding of the game, especially the attacking roles is first class. I can't think of many ex-players who can read, interpret and explain the dynamics of the modern game better. Future United manager? He is very smart and he is a strong character despite being a good guy. I think he already knows enough to manage United, but I'd like to see him become Fergie's assistant first. MUST patron as well. True red legend." Midfield General, 9/03/2010 at 11:01.

One would think you'd be thrilled that "future United manager" & "MUST patron" Solskjaer is recommending this lad, eh? But, no. Glass half empty, as always.
On that same thread, someone quite fittingly said this:
"Midfield General, You are starting to become a caricature of yourself, mate."

If you are a football fan then you must be able to see the big picture and that is that the game of football is dying on it's a*se, and has been for years, from the roots upwards.
I don't know the answers but I am sure that the first step is when a majority of fans wake up and recognize that there is a problem. I do know that the answer is not for the top few to take more and more of the money out of the game, that is how we got in this mess.

You have the cheek to call me an ABU!! Knowing you used to an Evertonian, your comments mean nothing to real reds like me.
Did you see Sneijder's pass last night btw?
Isn't he the player you said was nowhere near good enough for United? Seems he may be player of the year in Italy. Muppet.
Midfield General (17/03/2010 at 07:31)
Ole was not really a cheap youngster. 1.5 mil was not a small amount in those days - the record transfer in the UK was still only around 4mil. Muppet.
"We have always signed youngsters cheaply"
What like Ronaldo (12m) and Rooney (27m)? Muppet.

Sniffing around a liquidators sale for bargains is also perfectly legal, but I would rather United were above it. If the player is good enough, and I trust Ole's judgement, then we should pay a fair price, with future payments linked to player progression.
There are countless examples of kids being taken on the cheap (Wenger being the master) who have gone on to be worth many millions, and I think all fans of the smaller clubs already see the problem. Need the fans of the big / rich clubs to realise the situation is often unfair.
Midfield General (17/03/2010 at 09:01)
Still, 1.5mil was not peanuts, and we can be sure Stockport will get nowhere near that amount, so there is no comparison T+C.

You are anti-United. That's evident in everything you post. We identify a good young kid and out come your anti-United comments. We sign a new sponsorship deal and out come your anti-United comments. We reduce the debt slightly and out come your anti-United comments. SAF says he doesn't want to buy players at inflated prices and out come your anti-United comments. You are a classic ABU. If you weren't on here so often, I'd have had you pegged from a bitter troll. But even bitters have more integrity; they hate United through jealousy. Why you hate United isn't at all clear.
"Knowing you used to an Evertonian, your comments mean nothing to real reds like me."
Obviously, you aren't a red, you are a yellow. But worse, you are an ABU. Oh, and I wouldn't listen to that deluded moron Anything but Red. He hasn't got two brain cells to rub together. I accused him of being a scouser because he was cavorting with Spirit of Shankley and trying to get them to start FC United of Liverpool. Instead of saying he was on MUT business and supported Spirit of Shankley, he accused me of being an Evertonian because I knew of his actions. Infantile crap, of course. He didn't even think through why an evertonian would be on the Spirit of Shankley website. It was the first thing that popped into his head. He has a mental age of about 7. He doesn't realise that I still have friends who are in MUT, even though I split with them long ago for putting personal agendas ahead of the supporters they are supposed to be helping.
I have only ever been a United fan, from a United family and I'm well known for that. Unlike you, I AM a red and I could never be a yellow.
Oh, and as well as changing your allegiance from United to anti-Glazer, you've also gone anti-Tooth&Claw and anti-Real United Fans. Well done. I hope that bitter taste of bile stays with you.

Btw, Ole was an complete unknown at the time & at 1.5m an absolute steal. To spin that any other way is the height of fabrication. Ronaldo at 12m was also a massive steal, sold subsequently for a tidy 68m profit! And Rooney ... how much is he worth now? 100m they're saying? = 73m profit! *cues Muppet show theme song*

All I can say is the memory isn't what it was, it was not a deliberate attempt to mislead!
But the point remains, 1.5 for a untried young player from Norway was not peanuts, which a lot of young players do go for. How much will we pay for this guy? A couple of hundred grand?
Alex Charles (17/03/2010 at 17:38)
Calm down? Sure, after I stop my toes from laughing. If anyone needs to calm down, it's you. You've been giddy since the day the Red Knights arrived on the scene, and haven't come back down to Earth ever since. Here's a novel idea for you - how about you starting checking the FACTS before you start digging your holes? Oh wait, your hole's dug too deep already ...
"Never, even when proved beyond any doubt...."
You haven't proved one single thing, nevermind anything beyond a doubt. All you've posted is opinion after opinion after opinion. You're basically a broken record. You've never deviated one bit from the one singular option you fancy, and that's the Red Knights' (as-yet-non-)offer which you have swallowed hook, line & sinker. Not one word from you about the Zahavi-led Chinese billion+ bid that predates the RKs by a week or so ...
"All I can say is the memory isn't what it was, it was not a deliberate attempt to mislead!"
Selective memory you mean? Made-up bits, skewed recall with parts not fitting your argument conveniently left forgotten. Hard to take you seriously, to be honest, as you HAVE deliberately attempted to mislead on far too many occasions already. This is just but one occasion in which you got caught in your own lie.
"How much will we pay for this guy? A couple of hundred grand?" and "Stockport will get nowhere near that amount [i.e. 1.5m]"
Again - Clairvoyance of the highest order MG! Clearly, this is what fuels your burning agenda - in a word: SPECULATION. You need to stop your mind from wandering into alternating realms of negative-paranoid fantasies & self-fulfilling prophecies. No price on the lad has yet been mentioned. Can't you just sit tight, and wait for ACTUAL FACTS to filter in? Oh, wait, you're so steeped in fabrication you wouldn't know a fact if it hit you on the head, so why bother right? It's not going to me, but someone close to you seriously needs to smack you in the head. The sooner you get back down to Earth, the better.

I am not saying I prefer the RKs over any other potential new owner at all. But they are the only ones publicly saying or doing anything.
The chinese Zahavi bid, to my knowledge, has only been reported by one person - Harry Harris. He's a mate of Zahavi, so it might well be true. But we know almost nothing about this lot - if details come available I will review it. At the moment it is one journo (could be more and I missed it) claiming a bid went in a while ago and was rejected. There is nothing really to consider unless they plan another bid and release details.

And I do believe that some of the young players we have brought to OT will be bargains Rafael and Fabio,Macheda,Pogba and Petrucci all look as if they will be first team regulars and remember they are young.
So let's look forward and with any luck the Glazers will become just another irritation we can brush aside!
