AN OFF-DAY for Poynton’s batsmen saw them fall to defeat at Cheadle in division one of the Cheshire County League.
After winning the toss and asking the home side to bat first, Poynton started well with Australian Leon Guthridge claiming his first wicket in his first over, that of Cheadle opener Mark Roberts.
Guthridge continued to cause problems for the Cheadle top-order, reducing the home side to 96-6 with the help of Cheshire League XI bowler Rick Clark.
From 96-6, Cheadle formed a partnership of 50, with Chris Brady hitting 46.
This score helped the hosts reach 203 all out from 47 overs, Guthridge claiming career-best figures of 7-62 from a tireless 16 overs.
Gould and Kingham started well in reply, scoring freely and taking Poynton to 48 without loss inside nine overs. The fall of Kingham on 22 saw the start of Poynton losing wickets frequently, with only Gould showing any resistance, his 31 taking him close to 600 runs for the season.
Rana Malook and Adam Watkins claimed seven wickets between them and reduced Poynton to 133 all out.
In a must-win game for Poynton, Cheadle claimed 25 points and the visitors only seven.
