A transport revolution is on the cards following Stockport’s decision to vote ‘yes’ to the Manchester ‘super-council’.
In an exclusive interview with the Express, Councillor Goddard revealed he expects a united Manchester to kick-start both Stockport’s regeneration and its transport links with a major cash injection.
Coun Goddard said: "They have agreed Stockport is a special case and there should be a committee looking at its specific transport problems," he said.
"Stockport has historically not received the benefits but now I have negotiated that there will be a high level officer group that looks at this – that’s new and has come out of this." Likely improvements will include new railway stations at Cheadle and Gatley, more trains between Stockport and Manchester, and electric railway lines to Hazel Grove.
He also expects regeneration cash to pour into the town centre.
Stockport became the last authority to sign up to the combined authority on Monday after delaying its vote over the weekend. Coun Goddard finally signed up after gaining assurances over voting arrangements and guarantees that Stockport could opt out at a later date. The combined authority will now oversee Stockport’s transport and economic development.
Other transport projects set to be considered include train links to Marple and better park and ride schemes.
He is also confident Stockport will receive some of a new £120m government regeneration grant announced this week.
"A recent AGMA study said investment needs to be made in the ‘southern crescent’ of Greater Manchester," he added.
"It clearly says that. I will be saying that money should be going here. I can make a really strong case for Stockport to be included."
He said one project set to benefit would the £500m Bridgefield masterplan, which fell apart in 2008 after developer Lend Lease pulled out.
He added: "We would be able to kick start the regeneration of the town centre and the Bridgefield site that went because of the recession. Serious developers are now looking at town centres and if this sort of incentive was put forward I think they would look at Stockport favourably. We are much better on the inside than on the outside."

There are much greater areas of deprivation in Manchester and Stockport Council are continually telling us how vibrant and wealthy we all are. So I reckon we should get about 37p.

Any further details on the proposed new railway stations? Are they completely new (stations along the line to Altrincham) or is the proposal for the Cheadle Hulme and Gatley stations to be replaced? How will Marple be reconnected to Stockport?

In other words, he'd like it to happen, but it might not. Nothing's happened - apart from a meeting he's had agreeing there's going to be lots more meetings talking about it.

Why shop in Stockport when the shopping in Manchester is better and transport links are far superior.
Do not waste our money chum, accept the reality of the situation. Stockport cannot and never will be able to compete with Manchester.

Bringing Moss side and Wythenshawe to Stockports doorstep. Are the police and residents ready for the explosion in crime and drugs? And does Cheadle want the people of Gatley to be able to escape?
