A pensioner was battered with a truncheon in his own home by conmen posing as police officers.
The 73-year-old man was left with soreness in his arms following the attack in Osborne Street, Bredbury. The two tricksters ransacked the man's house and fled with cash.
Detective Constable David Wheatley, of Stockport CID, said: "This sort of crime makes my blood boil.
"These two cowards, posing as 'officers', have tricked a vulnerable elderly man and then attacked him with a weapon. How much lower can you get?
"We are doing everything we can to find these two thugs and we have increased our patrols in the area, both to provide visible reassurance to any members of the community who are concerned and to try and catch those responsible."
The two conmen gained entry to the man's home on Thursday, February 4 at about 10.20pm.
They claimed to be police officers investigating a spate of burglaries.
They attacked the pensioner with a two-foot truncheon when he answered the door.
Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward.
Det Con Wheatley added: "The victim is entirely faultless because these men barged into his home.
"What I would ask is that people who are approached by anyone purporting to be police take a minute to ask for identification.
"A genuine police officer will have no hesitation in producing their warrant card. Do not open your door to anyone until you are completely confident they are who they say they are."
The first man is described as white, about 5ft 6in, chubby but not overweight and dressed smartly, wearing a black jacket. The second is white, about 5ft 8in, aged between 20 and 30, thin and wearing a black jumper and a bobble hat.

Like Ace Riley says flog the vermin preferably in public at Old Trafford or Eastlands and then turf them off to Iraq or Afganistan and see how well they stand up to real fighting. No doubt they would be in tears because this kind are GUTLESS SCUM that should get no way out from tough punishment.
We are to busy charging a driver for blowing his nose at the wheel of his car. What has become of this country under this government makes me want to cry.

If you have elderly or vulnerable people why not give them a quick visit and have a chat about this, a 5 minute chat from you could make all the difference if someone tries it on with them and you may help them catch someone out.
