A COUNCILLOR claims residents should show more community spirit in dealing with the recent bad weather.
Councillor Roger West blasted residents and shopkeepers for not doing their bit to clear the roads and pavements outside their homes and premises and letting them become ‘death traps’.
He criticised homeowners who used the salt from the emergency roadside bins to clear their own drives and suggested residents should be legally obliged to clear a path outside their homes like in Germany.
Coun West said: “In Germany people have to brush away the snow outside their homes and shops by law and it has to be done before a certain time otherwise they get fined. That’s something to think about.”
He launched his campaign at an emergency Poynton Town Council meeting on Monday (January 4) to discuss how they can keep the town’s roads clear of snow and ice in future.
His comments came after Cheshire East Council (CEC) came under fire for failing to adequately grit the streets across Macclesfield and Wilmslow this week.
Councillor West added: “Cheshire East didn’t exactly cover themselves in glory, but I cannot understand why there wasn’t more community spirit.
“Everyone seems to sit on their backside rather than try to clear a path outside their own shops and homes because they say that’s the council’s job.
“Only a few shops cleared their part of the pavement, which is actually their responsibility - not the council’s.
“The rest made no attempt to, despite the danger it posed to other members of the public, particularly the elderly and disabled.
“People were even taking wheelbarrows to the salt bins, filling them up andusing it to grit their own drives. That is not what they are there for.
Then as the weather got worse it became more difficult for Cheshire East to get out and refill them.
“We called the meeting because we wanted to review the whole situation and discuss what options there are for us whether it be paying someone to clear it or doing it ourselves.”
Helen Thompson, of SAS Daniels Solicitors, in Macclesfield, said many people fail to grit or clear a path outside their homes or premises because they believe it will leave them open to legal action if someone still slips, but she says this is not the case.
She said: “As a shop owner you would have an obligation under the Occupier’s Liability Act to make the front of the shop and entrance safe.
“People should be able to get in and out safely.
“To simply ignore the snow and ice believing that you will be safe from personal injury claims should someone fall outside your business premises is wrong.”
RESIDENTS in Macclesfield did show true grit as they pulled together to help clear snow on their road.
Men, women and children from Sherwood Road all picked up a shovel on Tuesday to remove the snow and make it easier for pedestrians and motorists to pass through the street. Resident Paul Tann said: “With the local council not gritting side roads and with no grit available to buy, the residents of Sherwood Road pulled together to clear the road themselves after the snow.”

The problem was the selective reporting of what they said.
Of course juicy conspiracy theory can be more attractive than the facts.

They said it would 'probably' be a mild winter, though - they added - there was a 'one in seven' chance of it being harsh.
They got it wrong, just as those have got it wrong on the other side of the world where temperatures are presently 5/10 degrees higher than usual.

I for one was taken in, hook line and sinker, by the Global warming theory, absolute believer. That was until the outright lies and massaging of figures from the East Anglia University. That someone should be able to hack into their emails is incredible. More incredible though was what the emails showed. Distinct lies and changing of statistics to suit their global warming argument. Even the Russians got annoyed over selecting Russian data that suited and disregarding their data which prove the opposite. Now I don’t believe anymore.
Please do not credit Mr Clifford with accusing the Met Office of lying when they did not.
Furthermore to make a statement about the Met Office employee being “most of those who work there, are the most traditional, conservative Public School crowd around” is defamatory and grossly untrue.
Mother nature has known of cold winters before. My husband predicted the bad winter because,
a) We were over due one, and
b) Because of the number of berries on the Holly Tree.
That was not rocket science, merely an observation of nature. Extreme winters, was it, 1948, 1963, 1975, 1987, I believe: So we were overdue one.

i would like to know if the councillor spent a full day (as i did) with his neighbours, clearing the snow from the streets, or if the snow plough made it to his address??? and i would also love to know if i could have the quantity of grit that i pay for every month through my council tax, so i can grit my road (still not done after a week) in the absence of any council service...

I also agree with the comments about the grit bins, we live at the top of a hill which is like a skating rink and the grit bin at the bottom of the hill has been empty for the past week - mainly because of people using it to grit their own driveways. One woman filled 3 buckets from the grit bin and didn't even live on the road or even this estate!

I would like to clear the area in front of my shop. Where would I put the snow? On the road? In a big pile to one side for someone to trip over? Where?

Some councils were advising CUSTOMERS to take their waste to the local tip themselves, while the bin-men are sat in their depot's with a warm cup of tea because of health and safety risks. Still being paid for nothing by the tax paying CUSTOMERS.
We were expected to use their own transport at our own cost ignoring our health and safety. By the way if you take anybody else's waste to the tip you will need a waste carriers licence from the Environment Agency.
When I take my car for a service I dont expect to pay the garage owner and then carry out the work myself.
To all the councillors stop wasting our money on stupid projects to avoid an under-spend to your budgets at the end of the financial year buy a decent stock of grit with it instead. Stopping the abuse of expense claims would also help.

Also, when shop keepers are left to their own devices to clear ice and snow, they arrive at the shop early - lets say 8 am, and pour boiling water over their part of the pavement. Then I and many other workers and shoppers start off from home and slide down the unsalted pavements AND roads and think that by the time we get to the bottom of Mill Street it might be safe. No? No. Hot water and snow = ice = lethal. It made me feel physically sick in the stomach trying to get up Mill Street. That's why people do not want to grit outside others homes, in case someone with less morality than me sues the life out of them.
