COUNCIL contractors, Solutions SK, say they are doing everything they can to collect the borough’s recycling and refuse in the adverse weather.
Stockport Council are again asking residents to place all their recycling and refuse out at the front edge of their property by no later than 7am on the day of their collection. Each road that is due for collection on Monday 11th January 2010 will be assessed and if at all possible a collection will be made as normal.
A spokesman said: "There will be some roads that Solutions SK cannot safely collect from and where this is the case we ask residents to take their recycling and refuse containers back in and put them out on the next scheduled collection.
"When we are able to safely collect residents refuse and recycling, we will collect any excess recycling that is put out. Any extra recycling should be placed in carrier bags (not bin bags) next to your wheelie bin or recycling box.
"Refuse, as normal, must be placed out for collection in securely tied sacks to prevent spillage."
IT WAS care services as usual for older members of the Stockport community this week despite the harsh weather conditions.
Staff from Individual Solutions SK Ltd, plus other private and voluntary care sector providers braved the freezing conditions to ensure older residents continued to receive critical personal and practical support.
Individual Solutions SK, a Stockport Council company provide a number of services to older people, including hot community meals and home support.
With the freezing conditions gripping the borough in an icy chill the company put their contingency plans into action to ensure that all critical services were maintained for older residents. This included delivering 1,178 community meals across the borough between Monday 4th to Thursday 7th January.
One employee from sister company Solutions SK used their own 4X4 vehicle to help Community Meals employees reach inaccessible locations throughout the borough to ensure a hot meal delivery.
In preparation for further bad weather Home Support has acquired a 4X4 vehicle to ensure support can continue to people in rural and inaccessible locations in the borough. This vehicle has been used 24 hours per day this week and has also offered assistance to three other domiciliary care providers and the Pennine NHS Trust to make additional visits to people who required urgent support and medication.
There has been around 9,000 hours worth of private home support for older people in Stockport this week. Also, Individual Solutions SK Home Support team have continued to visit some 350 older and vulnerable people in their own homes throughout the week.
Councillor John Pantall, Executive Member for Adults & Health, said: "Staff at Individual Solutions SK, NHS Stockport and private and voluntary care services providers have all worked very hard to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our service users despite the very challenging weather conditions. I would personally like to thank them all for their tremendous effort.
"I would also encourage residents to continue to be good Samaritans by popping round to check on vulnerable or older neighbours to see if they need any assistance."

Snow: Wednesday 6th January 2010!
Work at Home
Due to the continued adverse weather and unavailability of grit, students should work from home. Staff should set work for examination groups (where possible) using the homework zone.
ICT Key Skills Exam on Thursday morning should go ahead regardless even if rest of school needs to be closed.
We may make a request tomorrow (depending on conditions) for students living close to the schools with shovels to help clear snow - please see web site tomorrow.
Maybe he/she is a god. The rest of us are staying safe and keeping our children safer.

They should be closed only if staff shortages are so bad that children would be virtually unsupervised, or because the heating etc has failed. Having said that in today's compensation culture I can understand the head concerns.
The world has changed significantly since th last time weather was like this. Both parents work and many people travel futher to get to work. The roads may well be passable but are they safe?

1963 was the coldest winter in 200 years and lasted for three months (I do remember it!)
This is the coldest spell for thirty years after several warm winters (remember the headlines about flowers coming out in January a couple of years ago!).
There is only one thing predicatabble about the British climate - its unpredicatability!
Sorry Blizzard I totally disagree with you about the occurence of cold spells

I must say that this feels very similar (accepting that I now live with the Southern nancies) to the ’63 weather and I was assured by Mum and Dad that the ’47 difficulties were much worse.
In short, get a grip (no pun intended), learn to survive in a big nasty world, leadn to drive if you are going to drive and take charge of your own responsibilities, duties, livelihood and, perhaps, personal pride.
