Mum’s anger over son’s ‘disgusting’ treatment

UPSET: Leanne Owen and son Kaden

DISGUSTED mum Leanne Owen is planning to take legal action against Stepping Hill Hospital after claiming her son’s medical condition was not treated properly.

The 25-year-old from Astbury Crescent, Bridgehall, claims she first took her son, Kaden Kelly, to the hospital when he was around 12 months old as he was having problems with his bowel movements.

He was then treated for constipation. But a year later it was discovered Kaden’s bowel was in the wrong place. He now has a stoma and wears a colostomy bag.

The mum-of-two, who has formally complained to the hospital, said: "It has been a living nightmare and could have been life-threatening. Kaden was wrongly diagnosed for a year. I was adamant it was much more than just constipation.

"Kaden was always in a lot of pain. He used to vomit all the time and then get diarrhoea. Watching him try and force a bowel movement was like watching someone give birth. Kaden used to bang his head against the wall, and I have since been told it was because he was in so much pain and could not express it. Kaden should have been referred to a bowel specialist. I will never go back to Stepping Hill. The treatment was disgusting."

Two-year-old Kaden eventually saw a surgeon at Stepping Hill in June after Leanne continued to press for an appointment. And on July 1 Kaden had a camera inserted into his back passage, which showed the bowel to be in the wrong place, and not formed properly.

Kaden is now being treated at Pendlebury hospital and it is hoped he will be able to have major reconstructive surgery to move his bowel.

Leanne added: "If the surgery is not successful he will have to have a stoma for the rest of his life. But I am relieved Kaden is now getting the right treatment."

Ann Barnes, director of operations for Stockport NHS Foundation Trust, said: "It is not the policy of this Trust to discuss the treatment of our patients in the media. We are concerned to hear the issues Leanne Owen has raised. We will be happy to discuss them with her if she contacts us directly."

People do get misdiagnosed from time to time, it's a fact of life. The child is now receiving the correct treatment so that's the main thing, I wish people would stop going to the media everytime something like this happens, just be grateful that we have the NHS system in this county. If you lived elsewhere you would'nt be able to afford those gorgeous hoops you're wearing AND treatment for your son.

I have a 2yr old daughter that suffers the same problem but all the health professions just keep telling me that she is constipated. It would be helpfull to know how i can get her reffered to a specialist. It is disgusting how children are treated by the stockport primary health care trust.

Nothing surprises me with regard to Stepping Hill.
I was miss-diagnosed and then they lost my notes, when I wouldn’t let it go and wrote in complaining the consultant refused further treatment and discharged me.
I wouldn’t go back to Stepping Hill if it were the only hospital with a door yet they boast about having the best statistics. I remember an eminent mathematician once said ‘Statistically, statistics rarely present a clear picture’

Why if she was adamant it was more than just constipation didnt she seek a second opinion especially as constipation does not last for 12 months.

The medical profession are at the mercy of the individual reporting the symptoms accuratly and if they persist they should seek further advice, not leave it to continue for 12 months.

My wife is a senior nurse at Stepping Hill and the quality of care and diagnosis is extremely good from all staff, consultants and surgeons based at the hospital.

I cannot agree that this is the hospitals fault, more so of todays unfortunate "were theres blame theres a claim" however I am certain Miss Owen is not in a position to claim against herself so the next easy option would be the trust itself, Just pityful.

Mike Bike... What a disgusting comment to make. Why comment on the way she dresses?. A young child was in a great deal of pain for gods sake and after being ignored decided to take it to the press. Look at the other comments, another lady has complained about the same problem. It shows that complaining to the press does help yourself and others.

Edward Aird - The point I was making was that spilling all in a local rag is not really the correct way to go about raising a formal complaint about the medical treatment her son has or has not had. Oh and for the record what is wrong in complementing someone on the way they dress?!

Interesting that Neoware, my wife is a senior nurse at the same establishment and although due to paperwork, continual risk assessments, lack of beds and poor management she is at her wits end she still states the care patients receive is the best possible but from the nurses and only a few lower ranked doctors. However she agrees the care is less and less obvious the further up the tree you look and when it comes to consultants she admits to having to look really hard to find a modicum of consideration and professionalism in the halo of arrogance.

I would be interested to know if Mike has ever had to raise a formal complaint with SHH ....and where it got him if he did ??
Many of us DO value our NHS,which is not free by the way,but paid for by us !For now anyway.
As more and more Privatisation is happening,the NHS will just be a logo.

How dare you comment on her earrings mike!!! when the fact of the matter is my nephew has suffered.she did go for a second opinion and thats how he was diagnosed. Lets hope your children never get ill, with the attitude that youve got!!

People always blame the parents and say they could of done more to get the right treatment for their children, what we do is always blocked by the doctors the people we're suposed to trust with our children, i took my daughter to stepping hill 3 times i have also took hert to the mri twice and got told my daughter has constipation and she will grow out of it, it started when my daughter was only 8 month old and still i get told she will grow out of it. I have wrote to my mp to get the refferal my daughter needs. How are we suposed to do what is best for our children when we have stepping hill hospital doing nothing? It is a rubbish hospital. I am speaking from experience as i have 3 children.

We only have Leannes side of this particular story and therefore we can only speculate.

Perhaps the initial symptoms of constipuation where due to the childs diet? Was Leanne feeding him pizza too early?

I would suggest she changes his name whilst he is still young as otherwise he will be disadvantaged with such a stupid,contrived name.

Has baby Kadens father any comments to make on the proceedings?

Cyberbob-i accept your comments though my comment about the contrived name hints at the widespread sypmtoms of a bling bling,where theres a blame chav culture which is steadily poisoning society.
