Wythenshawe Amateurs are six points clear of their Manchester Football League Premier Division title rivals after a 2-0 win over second-placed Walshaw SC.
The Ammies missed two early gilt-edged chances and were second best for most of the first half against lively and well organised opponents.
The Ammies were not helped as the influential Mark Hughes had to go to hospital with a bad knee injury before the break.
However, a change in formation and the introduction of substitute Mark Fairclough saw the game swing in their favour.
The opener came from Fairclough who then added another, and in the closing stages, the Ammies missed many more chances but delighted manager Ray Mallalieu with their grit and determination.
The seconds lost out to the only goal of their game at Walshaw SC.
Manchester Gregorians’ Northern Counties League semi-final in Hull was called off because of a waterlogged pitch.
Although their seconds lost 2-1 to Stockport Georgians they remain in second place in division two.
There was no joy for the A side who lost 2-0 to Hollinwood’s seconds in the cup and the B team lost by the same margin at Wilmslow Albion.
West Didsbury and Chorlton had an impressive 5-2 win over Salford Victoria to move to within two points of second place in division one.
West’s seconds also went nap as they walloped Atherton Town 5-1.
