DIDSBURY Golf Club entertainer John Keenan was absolutely delighted to win his club’s Ladies Cup and become the oldest winner of the trophy.
He beat in-form Didsbury captain Derek Dooley in the final, a special moment for him having been two hours from death following a severe heart attack a couple of years ago.
There was some consolation for Dooley who partnered Ken Sutton to victory in the men’s fourball, beating Paul Sherlock and Tony Tansey at the 23rd hole.
Other Didsbury ‘major’ winners included Kevin Hamilton in the Scratch KO with a final win over Peter Blair.
The sixth competition in the Didsbury Masters for Seniors had John Wilkinson leading in with 41.
Withington’s men played their summer medal final and Will Yates neded a cpo on 69 to win from Frank Beswick.
In an individual medal for non-qualifiers, Paul Weare was first past the post on 71.
Withington’s ladies played a singles Stableford, and in division one, Shirley Norbury was a clear winner on 41 points, while Liz Bradbury topped division two with 37.
Northenden’s men played their first winter Stableford in a tight finish in division one A Box won a cpo on 41 points from Franco Martinelli and C Spencer.
In division two A Johnson roared to victory with 45 points.
Chorlton’s men enjoyed an Olde English Competition, none more than Victor Borg and his partner Peter Jones as they posted a winning 45 points.
Hazel Grove’s professional and Manchester Alliance captain James Hopley led from the front as a full field of professionals and amateurs enjoyed the Sandiway course.
Inspired by their surroundings James and his Grove amateur partner Clive Beveridge posted an impressive 45 points to finish two clear.
The top individual pro on the day was Dukinfield’s David Green with 38 points.
Tameside continued to make their mark in the prizes as Fairfield’s dynamic duo of Jim Cooper and Alex Dawber topped the am am section with 45 points.
