DIDSBURY Golf Club’s men regained the Mersey League Trophy after a tough season of matches against the first and second teams of their local rivals.
Didsbury captain Derek Dooley, who was unbeaten in his partnership with Didsbury professionals Peter Barber and Dave Mackinnon, had great pleasure in receiving the trophy from Peter Parmeshwar, his Chorlton counterpart, who won the league last season.
The overall league placings showed Didsbury on top with 25 points from Sale (18), Chorlton (14), Withington (12) and Northenden (11).
In their respective divisions, Didsbury’s first team were top with 13 points from Northenden (nine) while the seconds led in with 12 from Sale (10).
Mike Campbell showed his quality in a betterball Stableford at Didsbury, partnering Ray Boland to a winning 43 points.
A midweek Stableford at Withington saw Andy Hughes first past the post on 37.
Northenden’s men enjoyed a betterball Stableford, none more than G Morewood and T Donnelly as they won a cpo on 41 from Lee Turner and Gary Mitchell and A Johnson and Jeff Slaney.
Chorlton’s men played the first round of their Wednesday Winter Par, and in division one, Jeff Grime won a cpo on 37 from Chris Hegarty.
Ray Higham also won a cpo on 37 to take division two from David Holgate.
In division three, local dentist Joe Keavney pulled out all the stops in a best-of-the-day 41 points.
Local golfers enjoyed playing in the Manchester Alliance fixture at Wychwood Park as Swinton Park professional David Smith enjoyed a great round in wet and windy conditions.
He powered his way to a five-under par score in posting 41 points to lead in the race for the individual pro prize.
He had an ideal partner in club colleague Peter O’Neill to complete a double with a superb 46 points to win the pro am section.
Shrigley Hall’s ever-reliable pair of Alan Pengelly and Phil Smethurst topped the am am section with 43 points.
De Vere Mottram Hall are hosting a Christmas Open on December 12 which includes coffee and bacon rolls on arrival, 18 holes of golf with shotgun start, mulled wine and mince pies upon completion of the golf.
