Maine Road boss Ian Walker has stood by his players despite a poor run of results continuing over the weekend.

After defeats by Ramsbottom United and Colne, Road were unable to get back to winning ways on Saturday as they drew 3-3 at Squires Gate.

The Lancashire and Cheshire League Premier Division managed to beat the weather with five of the seven scheduled games being played and leaders Spurley Hey kept up the pace with a comfortable 3-1 win over relegation-threatened Hooley Bridge Celtic.

But reigning champions Whalley Range retained their unbeaten record and stay seven points adrift of Hey with five games in hand as they beat Old Stretfordians 3-1.

Maine Road manager Ian Walker has called on his players to earn their place in the first team after revealing that no-one knows the side he will choose in their next game.

After threatening to wield the axe over his starting XI last week, Walker described Thursday’s training session as "intense" and says many of his players are fighting to keep their place.

Manchester League: Parkway edged a tight John Old Cup Preliminary Round One game 2-1 against Urmston at the weekend.

Having conceded on the break midway through the first half, Parkway took the game to Urmston after the interval and were rewarded when a stunning 30-yard shot from Murray Taylor was superbly tipped on to the post by the hosts’ keeper and Tom Culley followed up to slot home.

Maine Road boss Ian Walker is keeping his fingers crossed the weather holds out for Saturday’s game at Silsden.

Conditions there tend to be miserable and West Yorkshire is set to be hit by wind, rain, frost and maybe snow this weekend. But Walker wants the game to go ahead with Road’s positive recent run having already been disrupted by one postponement.
