It was a night of near misses for Whalley Range CC at the Manchester Sports Awards.

The club were runner-up in the Club of the Year category and head coach Mike Hill was runner-up in the Coach of the Year category at the awards held at Manchester Town Hall.

Range hit new peak in battle for summit

Whalley Range climbed up to third place in the Manchester and District Premier League after a six-wicket win at Deane & Derby on Saturday.

Range won the toss and put the hosts into bat, skittling them out for 106 in 31.5 overs with Aiden Erasmus taking a remarkable 5-5 off 3.5 overs.

Whalley Range’s first XI had to settle for a winning draw on Saturday, which allowed Stretford to leapfrog them into fourth in the Manchester and District Premier League.

Stretford chose to bat first and made 143-9 from 48 overs, with Saleem Akram (4-45) and Aiden Erasmus (3-15) doing most of the damage for Whalley Range.

South West Manchester’s first XI missed out on the chance to close the gap on Worsley as they suffered a 107-run defeat in Saturday’s top-of-the-table clash.

The Division One leaders were put in to bat by South West and went on to make 216-7 from 48 overs, with Richard Hope (51), Daniel McKeown (58) and Simon Hall (56) each hitting a half-century.

Wythenshawe and South Manchester met on Saturday in a clash that belonged solely to Craig Stone.

The bowler took seven wickets, a catch and even took a hat-trick to clean up the tail and round off a great day for himself and his team as they won by nine wickets.

Hyde made mincemeat of Didsbury at Werneth Low but they slipped seven points behind the leaders by collecting only the basic 20 points.

Didsbury were bowled out for 107, Danny Cranmer’s improving left arm spin earning him 5-9 and Scott Kirwin 3-30. Danny Berry, 34 not out, led the Hyde reply of 108-4.

Didsbury pulled off a much-needed win with a great team performance at Urmston seeing them to victory by 39 runs.

On a fast-scoring ground with an excellent wicket, Didsbury struggled to reach 80-3 early on.

Under-strength Range below par

Whalley Range were well below strength due to the unavailability of several key players and it showed as they were well beaten by Winton at Kingsbrook Road in the Manchester Association Premier Division.

It was a toil in the sun for the Range attack as Winton took full advantage to rack up a big target of 247-4 with Waqas Malik and Saagar Chohan the most successful bowlers for Range.
