FORMER Salford coach Karl Harrison believes back rower Luke Adamson could stake a serious claim for full representative honours in 2010.
Harrison who promoted Adamson to the senior squad when in charge of Salford feels another big year lies ahead for the forward.
Adamson came to the fore last season and greatly enhanced his reputation with some top drawer displays.
Harrison said "Luke certainly has the talent and the ability to step up and progress towards representative honours.
"He is a top quality young forward who has a great deal going for him. He’s very much an unsung hero. His pace instantly impressed me. For a forward, he is extremely quick. He has a lot of talent.
"What I like most about him was his refreshing attitude. He was never afraid to ask questions as to how he could improve.
"He was not shy in approaching me and you could see just how dedicated and determined he was. Luke was soon at home in the gym – he wasn’t out of place and is a terrific trainer. And a very good professional.
"Luke was prepared to make sacrifices in order to enjoy a good career – this is vital. I am delighted with his progress.
"He’s not your typical rugby league player in terms of background but he has done well and he was outstanding last season even when the team was struggling.
"Tackling has always been his strength but he does have the ability to run good lines and be extremely effective on attack.
"The best is yet to come. With better service he could be even more of a force. It’s a big season for him and he developed well last year. He added other dimensions to his game, played well and really showed what he was capable of.
"He has every chance of gaining representative honours because his determination drives him on. He’s a terrific player to call on and if anyone deserves success he does."
Adamson’s team-mates have been told they must fight for the right to earn a starting place in 2010.
The competition for first team places has intensified as Reds prepare for an important Super League campaign.
All eyes will be on new scrum half Matty Smith who replaces Richard Myler.
Smith spent last season with the Celtic Crusaders and will spend a full season at Salford on loan from Saints.
Football director Steve Simms has been quick to heap praise on Smith for the way he has quickly settled into life at Salford.
Simms said: "Matty has impressed everyone. He’s slotted in from day one and he could prove to be one of the good finds in Super League. I’ve certainly been impressed with what I’ve seen in his makeup.
"He’s picked up our drills immediately, slotted in superbly and his attitude is spot-on. He is a first class trainer and has been first in everything we’ve done whether it be football or fitness related."
