KEVIN ASHCROFT believes Salford City Reds bosses must seriously consider inviting rugby union neighbours Sale Sharks to join them in a ground share scheme at Barton.
Ashcroft, a former Salford coach is convinced a joint venture between the two clubs would significantly raise the profile of the ongoing Barton project.
Ashcroft told MEN Sport: "Surely it makes sense under the current climate for Salford to consider bringing the Sharks on board whenever Barton is ready. Such a scheme would guarantee all year round rugby. It would raise the profile of the new stadium and it would help both clubs in the long term.
"Personally speaking, if Salford went to Barton simply as a Super League club I don’t think this would be very viable. More is needed.
"The gulf between the two codes is not too great. Sharing the same stadium would prove to be extremely beneficial to the Reds and the Sharks."
Swinton chairman Malcolm White wanted Salford and neighbours Swinton to join forces and create a new Manchester Super League club 10 years ago.
"It could have really worked," he said. "Right now, it does seem extremely feasible for Sale to play at Barton and share with Salford."

you would have to be in manchester mr white for your idea we are in city of salford. sale sharks would be ideal for barton
Sale could provide the impetus to get this thing off the ground . There is no doubt that the new stadium needs a push from somewhere. My only caveat is that Salford should be the senior partner in this venture. Jim Shelton
