Kier Stands up for Vics

SALFORD Victoria, in blue, win an aerial challenge in Saturday’s stalemate with Standians.

A GLORIOUS injury time goal from Keir Jones gave Salford Victoria a deserved share of the spoils with mid-table Standians on Saturday.

The 3-3 result kept Vics fourth from bottom in the Bridgewater Office Supplies Manchester League first division.

Vics led 2-0 thanks to goals by Scott Jones and Mike Berry.

Scott Jones tapped in after skipping past two defenders and rounding the goalkeeper while Berry headed in the rebound after his long range shot had hit the crossbar.

Kier Jones’ goal three minutes into injury time was even more impressive. He finished off a silky 14-pass move with a fine volley at the far post.

But that strike only earned Vics a point due to a nightmare four-minute spell when leading 2-0 with just eight minutes remaining.

They conceded three goals in that spell and it was a case of déjà vu as Vics lost 3-2 to Standians after leading 2-0 earlier in the season.

But Jones ensured that Vics did not come away empty handed on this occasion. However, the entertaining game which was played in good spirit by both sides, was soured somewhat with Vics’ Daniel Collins being red carded for swearing at the death.

In another game at a rain-soaked Salford Sports Village on Saturday, second-placed Beechfield United moved to within three points of the first division summit following a 3-0 win against lowly Wilmslow Albion.

United beat the same side 4-2 seven days earlier.

Just like in the first meeting, Beechfield were far from at their best on Saturday but they did more than enough to come out on top.

Martin Blackshaw capped off good work from Anthony Weall and Danny Rowcroft with a neat and accurate finish to give United the lead against the run of play on 11 minutes.

Wilmslow enjoyed a fair chunk of the possession but they failed to create enough clear cut chances after their number nine had hit the post with a powerful strike.

With Rowcroft and Mike Gould working hard in midfield, Beechfield always looked the more likely team to score.

But United keeper Paul Bentley made three magnificent saves at the start of the second half before Gould put Beechfield 2-0 ahead in the 51st minute.

Blackshaw fired home 15 minutes later to secure the spoils and, with the late chances that they had, United should have gone on to win the game even more comfortably.

Beechfield’s reserve side went back to the top of the third division table with a morale-boosting 4-2 success at mid-table Wythenshawe Town reserves.

The result halted a bad run of results for United.

United’s players showed great composure in the face of highly aggressive opponents on Saturday and their goals were scored by Andy Traverse, Brad Loughrey, Mike Leech and Callum Wilkinson.
