Revival halted

SKIPPER Jon Robinson was one of two Salford City players to get red carded in Saturday’s 6-1 defeat to Chorley.

Salford City 1 Chorley 6: SALFORD City are still searching for their first home win in the UniBond League after their recent mini-revival was brought to an abrupt end by fellow strugglers Chorley on Saturday.

Bottom of the table City were comprehensively drubbed by the visiting Magpies in a dire second half performance. And yet there was little indication of the 6-1 trouncing that awaited them when Danny Toronczak put City into the lead on 34 minutes.

Chorley goalkeeper Peter Collinge bundled over Toronczak in the penalty box and, although Collinge parried his spot kick, Toronczak followed up to thump in the rebound.

The visitors’ first half equaliser came in time added on and resulted from a needless free kick on the left flank. Salford failed to clear and Chorley centre half Chris Smalley flicked the ball into City’s net.

The Magpies took the match by the scruff of the neck after the interval and lit up the fog-shrouded afternoon for their supporters with five second half goals.

They went in front after 55 minutes when Roger Sharrock was allowed to cut in, unopposed, from the left wing before showing good composure in placing his shot past home keeper Martin Campbell.

Things deteriorated further for the Moor Lane side when full back Simon Myerscough was red carded for the second time this season for two cautions. And the visitors took full advantage of the gaps which began to appear all through Salford’s defence.

Adam Farrell took advantage of some atrocious defending to hit the back of the net twice for Chorley from close range.

Smalley then popped up for his second strike of the afternoon before Stephen Burke wrapped things up for the visitors.

In between, City skipper Jon Robinson was sent off, also for the second time this season, following a reckless tackle.

Salford travel to second from bottom Harrogate Railway for a must win fixture this Saturday, December 6, kick-off 3pm, before hosting Skelmersdale United at Moor Lane in a UniBond President’s Cup clash on Tuesday, December 9, kick-off 7.45pm.
