SWINTON Moorside endured a miserable weekend of results in the Surridge Sports Manchester Association at the weekend.

They lost their H C Smith Trophy final with Bury at South West Manchester by two wickets and recorded a losing draw at second-placed Winton in the Premier Division.

As a result of the league game, Winton moved 12 points clear of third-placed Swinton Moorside in the table but dropped to nine points behind leaders Hindley St Peters.

Bury lie third from bottom in the table but on Sunday they added the H C Smith Trophy to their Surridge Sports Trophy success earlier in the season.

They bowled Moorside out for just 112 runs with Jamie McDougall top scoring on 32 runs.

However, Bury were always struggling to top that total in reply. They needed to score 22 runs from their last three overs but Gary Garner, who was unbeaten on 60 runs, came to their rescue with a couple of late boundaries to see Bury home with just two balls to spare.

The previous day, Winton amassed a competitive total of 173 runs for the loss of eight wickets from their 48 overs.

Kiwi Dom Rayner once again led the way with a well constructed 66. He shared a 99-run second wicket partnership with Russ Brown, who hit 37 runs, and the other Winton batsmen to reach double figures were skipper Mike Seenan, 14 runs, Rick Johnson, 11, and Christie MacDonald, 16 not out.

Chris Worsley picked up three wickets for 60 runs for Swinton Moorside and promoted second teamer Adam Finneran bowled well to finish with 4-37.

Swinton Moorside made a poor start in reply and were struggling on 46-3 at one stage. But opener Dave Flatley put up a real fight, hitting 60 of the visitors’ 131-9 total.

Worsley and Chris Hunt hung on for the last five overs to give Swinton Moorside three points from the fixture.

Man of the match Rayner took 5-37 for Winton, who came away with six points.

Their other wicket takers were Matt Wright (2), Seenan and Neil Fairhurst.

Winton and Swinton Moorside will both be taking part in the league’s twenty20 finals day at Hindley this Sunday, September 7. Winton play Hindley from 11am with Swinton taking on Wythenshawe after that game. The final will start at approximately 5pm.
