Clifton Cricket Club budget blown away by wind damage

A 12-metre high fence at cow corner of the team’s ground on Manchester Road twisted and buckled in stormy conditions last week, missing the houses it was meant to protect by just a few feet.

Members and players worked together to help make the fence safe over the weekend, but early estimates put the cost of repairs at an eye-watering £10,000 – enough to wipe out the Central Lancashire League club’s savings and more.

Saturday saw the only game played in the MDCA Premier League when Swinton Moorside hosted Stretford in the final match of the season.

Despite the inclement weather the drains at Moorside Park did their job as the match was reduced to a 30-over-a-side game.

Monton's high and low

The contrasts in Monton & Weaste’s first team’s season showed this weekend with a convincing victory over lowly Oldham and a defeat to champions elect Norden.

At home against Oldham, having lost the toss and been asked to bat in a reduced overs game, the visitors struggled against the tight opening bowling of Dom Gavin (5-39) and Danny Collins (2-24) as they were dismissed for 83.

First XI leads the way for Clifton

There was double success for Clifton CC’s first XI but double disaster for their seconds at the weekend as Glenn Bullock’s men gritted out two excellent wins but Ollie Dunn’s troops’ batting woes continued.

There was some great entertainment on show at Walsden on Saturday as the game swung to and fro.

Roth does damage with the ball to enhance Worsley title hopes

Worsley entertained Lostock on Saturday, knowing that a win would push their title hopes that one step closer.

On a day where the rain intervened on several occasions Worsley came up with the goods to convincingly beat the opposition by 85 runs.

Moorside collect cup while one win secures the league

Swinton Moorside had another excellent weekend in what is becoming one of their best seasons.

On Saturday they were victorious in the top-of-the-table clash with Winton and on Sunday they won the HC Smith Cup, beating Brooksbottom.

Steelmen collapse gives league leaders a stroll

Rain delayed the start of Irlam’s Lee’s Lancashire County League game and the game was shortened to 40 overs a side.

Irlam were put into bat by their visitors Prestwich who are the present league leaders and Joe Quinn made his usual aggressive start.

Fifth-place Winton must lick their wounds

Winton were put to the sword as they slipped to fifth place in the table by a dominant Swinton batting performance.

Winton lost the lost and were inserted into bat and got stuck in against the Swinton attack. Rick Johnson (60) and stand-in skipper Russ Brown (28) put on 55 for the first wicket. Leon Dewitt arrived at the crease and continued his good form before being unluckily run out for a run-a-ball 38.

Roe get back on track

It was a welcome return to winning ways on Saturday for Roe Green at home to Thornham.

Batting first in a game that was reduced to 40 overs with openers Kenyon and Hughes, getting off to a reasonable start, passing 50 before the loss of the first wicket, when Kenyon fell for 27.

Rising star Ben is in the runs again

There were mixed fortunes for Monton & Weaste first team at the weekend as they recorded a win at Werneth but then were beaten at home by Rochdale in the Central Lancashire League.

On a miserable day at Werneth, winning the toss and batting second helped Monton & Weaste secure victory.

Blackman is unplayable as Irlam conquer Hill

Rick Blackman was the hero as Irlam firsts chalked up an away win at Cheetham Hill on Saturday.

Irlam won the toss and decided to bat first but were soon in trouble, losing Joe Quinn, Mo Navid, Sahid Abassi and Ian Whitfield with only 39 on the board.

Worsley first team’s game against Westleigh was cruelly interrupted by the rain on Saturday.

Worsley won the toss and put Westleigh into bat. After 10 overs the home side were 61-0.

Spin twins Mike Seenan (6-30) and Leon Dewitt (3-23) combined to bowl Winton to a 122-run win over Deane and Derby.

Ric Johnson made an aggressive 33, Leon Dewitt hit 57 and there were key contributions from Seenan (17), Russ Brown (30) and bowlers Darren Carter (12no) and Simon Brittain (16) who added 36 for the last wicket.

Lacklustre Green wilt on their travels

It was a blank weekend for Roe Green firsts who travelled to Denton West on Saturday and Woodhouses on Sunday.

At West, Roe Green won the toss and decided to bat. They were soon reduced to 43-4, and with wickets falling regularly, it looked like they wouldn’t make 100. A good knock of 36 from Gaz Williams saw them finish on 132 all out.
