SALFORD might be proving a popular tourist destination - for travellers from another world.
After last week's article detailing the sighting of a possible UFO in Irlam, the Advertiser has been inundated with calls from residents who say they have also seen mysterious unidentified flying objects.
Government officials began investigated the incident which took place last year. Reports uncovered by a Freedom of Information request show that an orange circular ball was spotted high in the sky above the area.
According to astonished bystanders, the ball was initially low in the sky and then shot up into the atmosphere very quickly.
One astonished resident even saw the ball from her home in Hope.
Nicola Davies, 34, said: "I'm normally really sceptical about these things, and don't believe in aliens or UFOs or anything.
"But when I saw the orange ball, I hadn't a clue what was going on."
Nicola, who lives near Hope Hospital, saw the unexplained object flying low in the direction of Stott Lane playing fields, and reached for her camera to capture the image on film.
She said: "I wasn't sure what it was, and was scared to tell anyone in case they thought I was mad!
"I knew it couldn't be the moon or the sun - it was too close. I just found it so odd, and then completely forgot about it until I saw the piece in the paper."
This incident is one of many sightings of UFOs recorded by the Ministry of Defence, who keep an eye open because of possible implications for national security.
A spokesperson for the Civil Aviation Authority said: "Sometimes UFOs are weather balloons. Sometimes they are military jets. And sometimes we just don't know."

in 1971 and was returning home late one evening.
In the Eastern Sky there were two prop planes flying from East to West.
I noticed a large orange dimly
cigar object in the East above where I first spotted the planes.
Two orange spheres similar to the one photographed here came out of the cigar shaped object and positioned themselves just above the cockpits. They stayed with the planes as they crossed the sky to the area of Lake Michigan in the West.
I pulled off of the road and parked because my field of view was open due to farmers fields.
Every one I told about the incident didn't believe me and joked with me about it.
The next morning the Manistee Radio Station WMTE
reported that two Manistee Deputies had thought a large commercial plane was going to land at the Blackner Airport. They parked and watched surprized that the two planes with detached orange
lights above them continued over them and on to lake Michigan.
The large Cigar shaped craft stayed in position for awhile and then eventually got dimmer and dimmer until it went out.
I remember thinking to myself that the pilots would never see or know these objects were flying along with them.
I had experienced many late night flights inside of prop planes similar to these while stationed at NAS Grosse Ile.Michigan while in the U.S.Navy.
I could not identify the planes
but they were of medium size with a motor on each side.
The orange spheres were exactly like those in these articles.
