Up and over: A new way to bridge the gap between Manchester and Salford

NEW LANDMARK: The Irwell footbridge is lowered into place

A sleek new footbridge has been hauled into place over the River Irwell to link Spinningfields with Salford.

The walkway, the latest stage in a £72 million transformation of the river corridor, connects Manchester with Stanley Street in Salford, the Mark Addy pub.

Developers say that the bridge will help the next phase of regeneration on both sides of the river. It will open to the public in the spring.

Coun John Merry, leader of Salford council, said: "It is always exciting when we are so near completing a new landmark for the city.

"More importantly, this new bridge will unlock the economic potential of this area of Salford, setting the scene for further jobs, ready to develop much needed business and commercial space in New Bailey."

Seems will look nice, but not far from the bridge on New Basiley Street and the bridge by the Lowry Hotel ? Bit of a waste of money? All a bit clutterted around there and LOOKS so unplanned!
