A HIGHWAYS boss has slipped and broken his ankle on one of the roads he is in charge of maintaining.
Coun Derek Antrobus slipped on some ice on an ungritted pavement in Salford. He badly injured his ankle and has had to have an urgent operation.
The Labour councillor, who is responsible for maintaining the roads, is now recovering at his home in Swinton.
He is expected to be off work for several weeks.
Coun Antrobus said: “I did it just around the corner from where I live.
“It is a fairly bad break. I’m still recovering from the surgery and I’m not feeling too good at all.”
A spokesman for Salford council said the councillor
accepted that he should have been wearing more sensible shoes.
The spokesman added that the pavement in question had not been gritted because the council had ‘prioritised the primary roads’ in the area.
She added that the councillor’s fall had been ‘simply an accident’.
Coun Norman Owen, leader of the Salford Lib Dems, said: “We wish Coun Antrobus all the best for a speedy recovery.
“Maybe in next year’s budget we could have some money for gritting the roads.”

Why what was he wearing…. 6inch stilettos.
But on a serious note this must have been very painful for him, and I can just see the comments now saying how it’s his own fault for not gritting the pavements.
They had to prioritize the grit and cover the main roads first

Perhaps he'll realise now that bones are far more valuable than almost all vehicles. It may be a nuisance waiting for inusrance payouts etc but nowhere near as bad as waiting for bones to knit!

Am I alone in remembering when Swinton council looked after its residents unlike this bunch of wastrels?

no its just an old picture don't think the MEN would send somebody round to his house for a photo, and only a fool would think they would ask him to hobble to the town hall to have his picture took.

theres one branded as a police car now. yet it does not have any lights on it? and it was illegally parked on the pavement.
so no cctv signage around the area? impersonating a police car and illegally parked. oh dear! i think they should seriously reconsider this one too!

I don't think the article specifies where the fall occured Paul.
I'm pretty sure that Swinton is part of Salford though.
Afterall, that's where the City Council's main offices are located. Presumably, also the reason for the use of the library photo of Councillor Antrobus at the town hall.
Or are you making a point about county boundaries?
