Traffic chaos after M60 crash

I was travelling in the opposite direction on the other carriageway this afternoon and so there should have been no delay but we slowed right down for miles and put about an extra hour on the journey, merely because drivers were slowing down to look at the accident, as far as I can see. Could not the police wave the traffic on? Could not one copper be spared from the duties of throwing a party for gipsies and enforcing diversity?

Visibility at this junction is often difficult, particularly on the short slip roads where the M602 and M60 intersect. I have observed an increase in drivers who use sidelights and dipped lights on our roads during periods of glaring low sun (not just Volvo drivers!). This seems a sensible precaution to take when driving with glaring sun behind you and you are in busy motorway traffic, with surrounding drivers often changing lanes without checking blind-spots properly. Of course this analysis doesn't extend to the idiots who drive around in the daytime with their front fog-lights on! Despite UK roads having a good overall safety record, perhaps it's time for further measures to improve driving standards - e.g. new driver probationary periods, the introduction of motorway testing, regular testing every 10 years. I know people will moan but why not strive for better standards. And... any improvement initiatives might just help stimulate economic activity ;-)

Voter - Did you not know that they wear yellow so they can stand around like lemons? The real waste of money is the Highways Agency. This only covers England and they appear to have little clue about getting traffic moving. They must go on the same course as the PCSO’s to learn how to stand round and not even look busy...
