Starved to half weight

Rex the Mastiff-type dog who was starved to half his weight

A MUM-OF-SEVEN from Eccles has been banned from keeping animals for 15 years after starving her dog to half its normal weight.

Jeanette Oliver, 39, of Hiley Road, was found guilty in absence of causing unnecessary suffering and failing to meet the needs of ‘Rex’ after letting the 14-month-old tan Mastiff-type dog fall to less than 24kg.

RSPCA inspector Cath Byrnes discovered the heavily emaciated dog after an anonymous tip off.

She said: "This was one of the worst cases of emaciation we have seen.

"The condition we actually found the dog in was so severe that if it was left it could have died.

"We’re pleased with the prosecution as people need to be held accountable in cases of such deliberate neglect of an animal."

Mastiffs of Rex’s size typically weigh 45kg, according to the vet who examined him but the dog had not been fed or watered adequately for weeks or even months.

Salford magistrates heard that at the time of the animal cruelty, Oliver had been struggling to juggle part-time work with childcare while pregnant with her seventh child.

The dog was so thin that Oliver’s children were ashamed to walk him, however Rex is now making a steady recovery.

Cath Byrnes said: "He’s now of a more normal bodily condition and we’re satisfied with his current condition and he can only really go up from here.

"Now we can focus on looking for somewhere suitable to re-home him."

During sentencing on Monday, Oliver, a Salford Royal Hospital cleaner, was ordered to do 120 hours’ unpaid work and pay £375 in costs.

The court also gave her a two-year supervision order and took Rex away.

She should be banned from having any animals forever. She claims to be struggling holding down a job, being pregnant and looking after her other 6 kids. Well its simple, she should have never got the dog in the first place cause it could have gone to a loving home and family or when she knew it was all getting too much for her to cope she should have given the dog to a family who would look after it. The women needs locking up and I just hope that the people who live around her dont let her forget how sick and disgusting she is. I hope she rots for this. Also if shes struggling to just put down some food for her dog how is managing to look after a family as big as she has?

I hope that this despicable woman takes better care of her children than she did of Rex. It occurred to me that if she had no time to feed him, how is she going to be able to perform the unpaid work as ordered by the court?
